Day 6 of our 10 Customers in 10 Days Data Center Anywhere series focuses on MiTek Industries.

MiTek Industries is a diversified global supplier of software, engineered products, services, and equipment to the residential, commercial, and industrial construction sectors. A Berkshire Hathaway company since 2001, MiTek comprises more than 40 operating companies that sell over 4000 products around the world.

Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, MiTek’s business has expanded and diversified over the years. Today, the company has more than 40 subsidiaries and 114 branch offices spread around the world, all of which have long been autonomous from a technology standpoint. “We have a good-sized IT staff for supporting four or five branch offices, but 114 is rough,” says Jason Birdwell, network manager at MiTek., “especially when they’re all using different systems.”

The redesigned Cisco ACI network has become the glue that is binding MiTek and its subsidiaries enabling new levels of efficiency, consistency, and automation. Using a Cisco ACI Multi-Pod configuration, the company has connected its primary data center in St. Louis with its disaster recovery data center in Denver for automatic failover.

The microsegmentation capabilities of Cisco ACI will also be utilized by MiTek, providing additional application isolation and east-west security with plans to stretch its network fabric to the cloud and around the world.

In the future, Mitek plans to extend network policies to the cloud with Cisco Cloud ACI. “We also have an opportunity to switch from Cisco ACI Multi-Pod to Cisco ACI Multi-Site, expand our footprint overseas, and reduce application latency for our offices in Asia,” says Birdwell.
