IP Address Managment and the Cloud: Cisco IAC now integrates with Cisco Prime for Service Providers and Enterprise

IP Address Management and the Cloud is a topic that requires solution architecture for every cloud deployment.  While Cisco IA for Cloud has a basic in-built IPAM system out of the box, often times we find customers need one of the worlds highest  scale IPAM solutions.   Cisco’s  Prime Network Registrar is one such product in this category.

Cisco Intelligent Automation for Cloud (IAC) is a cloud management platform for Enterprise IT or Service Providers to build cloud services, such as IaaS. You can learn more about it here. The IAC solution supports a customer’s cloud journey by providing a solution that is extensible, scalable and easy to use in order to help them reduce the operation costs, optimize their resource utilization and efficiency.

One of the areas that are critical to customer’s infrastructure growth is IP Address Management (IPAM.) This is especially critical to large enterprise or service providers who need a scalable and extensible IPAM solution. Cisco Prime IPAM is the solution that provides strong IPAM management capability as described in Jamie Lerner’s blog.  With these two best of breed products both coming from Cisco and both aiming to give customers scalable management solutions, it makes perfect sense to build integration between the two products. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce an integration recently made available by our engineering team to integrate CIAC and Cisco Prime IPAM. This integration will be made available to customers as part of the latest release of IAC, 3.1.1.

To explain what we have done, the following figure shows the high level end-to-end use case:

In this use case, it starts with a user ordering a virtual machine from a cloud built with Cisco IAC. This order is handled through the Cisco Cloud Portal (CCP) and Cisco Process Orchestrator (CPO). In the case where a customer has Cisco Prime IPAM, IAC will obtain an IP Address from the Cisco Prime IPAM.  Before IAC invokes the API to acquire an IP address, the Prime IPAM shows the first available IP address is 192.168.10.9, as shown in the following figure:

DHCPv6 in the Cloud – DHCP Performance Testing and Results

As service providers move to cloud-based services, their IP addressing management system must operate efficiently in the virtualized environment of the cloud.  And within the cloud environment, these systems for DHCP, DNS and IP address management must also be fast. For example, many organizations have expressed a concern that poor DHCP performance could be the weak link when thousands of customers come back online after a failure event.  If DHCP address requests are handled in a slow or scattered manner, servers will not be able to service all requests in a timely fashion.

Another requirement for IP address management systems is support for IPv6, as the depletion of IPv4 addresses has led to many organizations finding themselves facing a rather accelerated and mandatory migration to IPv6 (read: yesterday’s World IPv6 Launch). Cisco Network Management: Now with New and Improved Management Across the IP NGN

If you’re a network administrator, at times it may seem like the IP network traffic and volume of IP addresses and devices you oversee are increasing at an unmanageable pace.  On top of that, the complexity and size of IP networks continue to expand, and network operators are beginning to transition to IPv6 and introduce new technologies and services into their networks (VoIP, video, cloud computing, virtualization, etc.). Network operators need to accelerate provisioning and simplify service activation.

Given the mission-critical importance of DNS and DHCP services in today’s service provider and enterprise networks, you now face huge challenges with IP address management that must be addressed. Without a fast, reliable, and secure DNS service, subscribers’ broadband Internet access will be compromised. If DNS fails, the Internet will fail. Likewise, DHCP is a core network access technology -- every device must be assigned a unique address when connected to the network, a virtually impossible task to undertake manually.

To effectively address these challenges, network administrators need an integrated solution for DNS, DHCP, IPAM (DDI) to effectively manage IP address growth and help automate the adoption of IPv6.

As part of its service provider network management portfolio, Cisco is introducing Cisco Network Registrar 7.2 which provides an integrated, scalable, reliable solution for DDI across multiple technologies to simplify management of IP addresses and the transition to IPv6. Cisco Network Registrar is the industry’s fastest and most scalable DHCP server - able to assign more than 47,000 leases per second on a Cisco B-Series UCS platform (and 14,000 leases per second on a non-Cisco hardware platform) and support more than 50 million devices in a single customer deployment.
