As we settle into spring, I’m anticipating an exciting annual event — The Tech Challenge at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California. This is an amazing program that brings together thousands of students and gives them a chance to flex their engineering muscles.
In its 26th year, The Tech Challenge continues the mission to promote science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education with the “Asteroids Rock!” project. In this year’s scenario, an unmanned spacecraft launched from Earth and landed on an asteroid. From there, it must transport 3 packages of delicate testing instruments to specified locations. The students must tackle this challenge with creativity and ingenuity.
On April 16th at 11:00pm GMT, the first of two botnets began a massive spam campaign to take advantage of the recent Boston tragedy. The spam messages claim to contain news concerning the Boston Marathon bombing. The spam messages contain a link to a site that claims to have videos of explosions from the attack. Simultaneously, links to these sites were posted as comments to various blogs.
The link directs users to a webpage that includes iframes that load content from several YouTube videos plus content from an attacker-controlled site. Reports indicate the attacker-controlled sites host malicious .jar files that can compromise vulnerable machines.
On April 17th, a second botnet began using a similar spam campaign. Instead of simply providing a link, the spam messages contained graphical HTML content claiming to be breaking news alerts from CNN.
Cisco Intrusion Prevention System devices, Cloud Web Security, Email Security Appliances, and Web Security Appliances have blocked this campaign from the start.
In BayArena, video and mobility offerings will be core to delivering one the most connected and interactive fan experiences in international football, and all of sports. StadiumVision will centrally manage high definition video and digital content delivery to approximately 500 high-definition video displays, Connected Stadium Wi-Fi will give thousands of fans reliable and fast access to the Internet, and StadiumVision Mobile will deliver live video to those connected fans’ mobile devices, through the planned Bayer 04 app.
Wolfgang Holzhaeuser, Bayer 04’s managing director, stated, “The project heralds a new dimension in communication between the club and its fans – one that will boost fan loyalty and offer more information and entertainment. We’re blazing a trail for the Bundesliga.”
StadiumVision Mobile is the perfect example of what the new fan experience will look like. This video from Fast Company showcases how the solution allows fans to connect to the action through their personal mobile device at Barclays Center during Brooklyn Nets games.

We’ve been really busy but also very thrilled about the work we’re doing to future-proofing the network, and it seems we’re not alone. One of our latest innovations, adaptive radio modules for the AP3600, has been selected by UBM as a Best of Interop finalist for the Wireless award category!

What are the Adaptive Radio Modules?
The Adaptive Radio Modules a family of solutions in a modular form factor that allows customers to adapt their wireless network to their current and future needs. The Adaptive Radio Modules provide a dedicated third radio that can be field upgraded on the 3600 Access Point.

This year we’re moving our Packet Optical Conference 2013 to San Jose and it promises to be an exciting three days (May 14-16) full of demonstrations and sneak peeks at new platforms and technology. We’ve also got a number of industry speakers including Krish Prabhu, CEO of AT&T Labs and Bikash Koley, Principal Architect at Google, in addition to key Cisco leaders and technology visionaries. The event will also feature two customer panels featuring representatives from Comcast, Microsoft, Verizon, FTP Vietnam, and others.
