Welcome to the video party, Google!
There were lots of stories this past week about Google purchasing Global IP Solutions (GIPS), a fine Norwegian company that specializes in supporting real-time audio and video over the Internet. Here’s the link to the story in VoIP Planet.
Why are we happy at Break Down the Walls to see Google get VTC fever? Because we think the more the merrier when it comes to increasing the adoption of video of video teleconferencing, and helping to make it ubiquitous. That benefits everyone, whether via Internet-based “best effort” technology or through dedicated VTC equipment like ours.
Interestingly, GIPS licenses its technology to many prominent technology companies to support their VoIP and video capabilities, including Yahoo (Messenger) and Apple (iPad and iPhone). It remains to be seen whether the company will continue this type of licensing once Google consolidates its new purchase.
