How prepared are you for the future of cable telecommunications? You’ll have a chance to find out with the return of the SCTE IP Challenge over the next few weeks.

With the support of our friends at Cisco Systems, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers has brought back the challenge in a bigger and better way to help test knowledge and heighten understanding of the Internet Protocol (IP) technologies that will shape our industry in the years to come.

To get involved – see below for the cool prizes you can win – there are three things you need to know. First, that three online qualifying rounds began at midnight Saturday and are continuing through June 23. Second, that registration and other information is at And third, of course, is the IP knowledge for which the Challenge will be testing. This year’s challenge consists of the following six categories: IPv4/IPv6; Configuration; Routing; CMTS and DOCSIS; Multimedia over IP; and Networking Theory.

What’s in it for you? At the very least, you’ll have a good time pitting your knowledge of IP against your cable brethren. Many of the challenge questions also will help you to prepare for the SCTE Internet Protocol Engineering Professional (IPEP) certification ( And for the top eight finishers, there will be a complimentary registration to SCTE Cable-Tec Expo this fall in Orlando, where the IP Challenge Finals will be held before a live crowd – no pressure, right? – on October 16.

The finals will combine a fast-paced, “Jeopardy”-style question format, router and CMTS configuration and hands-on activities that will pit this year’s finalists against each other, and also against the defending 2011 SCTE IP Challenge winner, Steven Callahan, senior network engineer for Time Warner Cable.

The winner will receive one full conference pass to Cisco Live and one full conference pass to SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2013, at which he or she will defend the IP Challenge title. All participants in the qualifying rounds will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win one of five CCENT Part 1 Training Packages (includes CCNA1 Cisco Academy e-course, practice exams and textbook) and two boxes sets of Cisco Library Books.

So don’t be shy. Show us what you know about the IP transition that will take our industry into the future. Take the SCTE IP Challenge plunge this week, and with any luck, we’ll see you in October in Orlando.
