Leading the Charge in the DOCSIS Revolution

It was only a matter of time before DOCSIS 3.0 swept the cable industry. The benefits that DOCSIS 3.0 IP capabilities can deliver—more content, more mobility, more personalization, all at a lower cost—are simply too great to ignore. That industry evolution is now picking up speed, and I’m happy to report that Cisco is leading the pack in DOCSIS 3.0 technologies.

LightReading recently published quarterly market share estimates for August 2011. The upshot: Cisco is maintaining “a hammerlock” on the CMTS market, with a global market share of about 60 percent.

ACG Research (ACG Market Release 2Q11 Worldwide Video Infrastructure) found similar results, stating that Cisco’s CMTS market share grew by nearly 3 points last quarter to a commanding 65.8 percent of the market.

Setting the Standard
Of course, we’re thrilled to be playing a major role in this industry transition. But there’s a reason Cisco is generating so much enthusiasm among service providers: Because the Cisco CMTS platform and next-generation 3G60 line cards really are the state of the art in DOCSIS 3.0 technology. They really do deliver the highest density cable video services, at the lowest cost in the industry.

We’d like to think our key messages around these products—industry-leading scalability, massive downstream and upstream channel capacity, carrier-class availability—are getting through. But at the end of the day, this isn’t about marketing. It’s about the real-world benefits these solutions provide to our customers: the ability to deliver a superior experience to subscribers, and to enable new media capabilities that competitors can’t match.

Using a Cisco CMTS and 3G60 solution, Brian downloaded an entire season of “30 Rock”—23 full episodes—in about a minute and a half. And he did it on camera, over a real-world production network, the first ever with 1-Gbps broadband download speeds.

The Journey Continues
Now, Cisco is announcing yet another major Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 customer: Virgin Media. Virgin Media is conducting trials using Cisco CMTS and 3G60 technology to deliver a suite of new entertainment services, including interactive digital TV and ground-breaking cable connection speeds (up to 1.5 Gbps download; 150 Mbps upload).

The industry evolution is just getting started, and I for one can’t wait to see what happens next.

  1. Well it is nice to say some is incorrect, but state what is incorrect. I w3as talking about upstream Bandwith, from the home. John maybe you missed this, as the topic ofr bandwidth. I am not incorrect on this solution. You speak of Download BW and not US BW. It is a fact that US BW from the end user (business) is below FIOS. So John, be specific as to what is incorrect to carry this sicussion on further. I do not have an agenda to sell anything, but state facts of what technology can do and can possibly do in the next 3-5 yrs. The BW from the end user in the Cable world is severaly limited un the US capabilty.

  2. All this sounds great, but it is not new news. The total bandwidth that you mention is not available to the individual Homeowner. It is still a shared medium and will be throttled by CM COS. FIOS will give you better bandwidth to the individual, but DOC30 does give more BW than previous options, except for fiber. DOC30 still has much life in the process, due to infrastructure of the home. But there are limitations in the return path for US BW that no one is addressing. I addressed this while employed by Cisco, but markets and $$ are stopping the process. The whole US path of optics and RF combining network has to be modified to allow for better use of 64QAM bonding in the US path. The present BW of <40MHz is the limiting factor. When the plant changes to the 85MHz split will CATV operators be able to offer Business services with QOS levels for residential and business. So the BIG DOC30 is still only DS BW with limited US BW to really expand busine$$.

    • Mr. Floer is incorrect in many of his assertions. The ability to deliver 1 Gbps or more over a Cable IP network is a relatively new thing. While Mr. Floer correctly points out that Cable is a shared medium, operators are able to portion out segments of their total bandwidth to offer higher speeds to individual users – including SLAs with bandwidth guarantees. And the higher the total speed, the greater the speeds that can be offered to individual users. Many cable operators currently offer top “bandwidth tiers” with speeds of 50 Mbps, 100 Mbps and greater, and these speeds are available to single subscribers to those tiers. Unlike FiOS, DOCSIS has the capability to go to even higher speeds. Also unlike FiOS, these higher speeds can be achieved with very reasonable economics for the cable operator.
