Statement of Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers

Today, President Obama takes the important step of creating a new council on Job and Competitiveness.  The Council will focus on finding new ways to promote growth by investing in American business to encourage hiring, to educate and train U.S. workers to compete globally, and to attract the best jobs and businesses to the United States.

Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers states:

“The Council on Jobs and Competiveness elevates the need to develop real solutions to drive job growth and create a  competitive environment for American business globally. These two priorities are paramount to the future success of our country and Jeff Immelt is exceptionally qualified to lead this Council, with his proven leadership, deep understanding of American business and global market dynamics, and exceptional trust among his business peers.  We commend President Obama for bringing government and private industry together to  focus on getting America back to work, and accelerating our country’s position as a global leader.”

  1. Most comments are very well documented with their encounters with the company run by Jeff immelt. However, I feel that palatability on real solution for job growth and competiteve environment in todays dynamic global market must not be based on one or two issues that are not pertinent to the role of a coucil leader for the new program. Survival is every persons second nature. However, success and growth in a converget enviroment and dynamic global market are prerequisite skills to a good leadership. In my opinion no one is infallible, if we have te see things under the microscope there would be no leaders, and disarray will follow.

  2. I thought the best works are in the united states, anyway, this is a very good idea but if you include best workers of any part of the world, you´re most powerfull!!

  4. There is no doubt that we can increase employment if the government got smarter on its policies and incentives for businesses. Glad to see Obama is working on it. It would be great if Jeff is appointed to the post.

Hi John, Perhaps Mr. Chambers and Mr. Pond can explain why suppliers to Cisco located in 26 different countries enjoy favorable Cisco payment terms of Net 30 while U.S. suppliers have onerous Cisco payment terms of Net 60? Additionally, please explain why 75% of Cisco's new job creation during its Fiscal Year 2010 were in locations outside the United States and why in the first quarter of fiscal 2006, when Cisco distributed cash from its foreign subsidiaries reporting an extraordinary dividend (as defined in the Jobs Creation Act of 2004) of $1.2 billion, yet again 75% of Cisco's new job creation were in locations outside the United States during Fiscal Year 2006? Finally, please explain why Jeff Immelt is a good choice to advise President Obama when in 2007 General Electric had 155,000 U.S. employees and in 2009 it only had 134,000 U.S. employees. Especially since simultaneously, in 2007 General Electric had 172,000 employees in locations outside the United States, meanwhile in 2009 General Electric still had 170,000 employees in locations outside the U.S.? I mean don't you find it "telling" that in the 2007 to 2009 time period, Jeff Immelt cut GE's United States employees by 21,000 but only cut its employees located outside the U.S. by a mere 2,000?   6. Mr. Earnhardt's statement about competitiveness would be more palatable and real-world based if he had any idea how poorly his Flip company serves its customers. My own experience is returning a defective Flip (once), returning a defective Flip rechargeable battery (once) and a nightmare in customer "service" (in quotes because there is no "service" being offered me, just trouble). I've been trying for weeks to get Mr. Earnhardt's email address because he would no doubt be shocked at how Flip customer "service" has treated me. First order of business for a CEO is to make sure that their own company is working properly, and Flip and its customer "service" are not working. Fix Flip, then worry about competition.
