Honeywell Strengthens Wireless Solutions Offering With Cisco

Otherwise known as: “Industry Leaders Expand Customer Choice and Reduces Total Cost of Ownership”.

A press release out of Honeywell’s Baveno, Italy site late last month told of Honeywell’s announcement that it is offering wireless access point[s] (the Aironet 1552 Access Points to be precise) from Cisco – “global leader in networking”, as part of Honeywell’s OneWireless™ solution of industrial wireless products and services.

The Press Release stated that “These solutions provides customers seeking to implement a long-term, plant-wide wireless infrastructure at their industrial facilities with industry leading technology and support from two of the largest and most established wireless solutions providers in the world.”

It was all about Cisco’s new Aironet 1552 Access Point together with Honeywell’s OneWireless network, providing wireless coverage for both Wi-Fi applications and ISA100.11a field instruments under a single infrastructure and minimizing total cost of ownership.

Honeywell stated that the addition of Cisco’s technical capability and experience in mesh infrastructure and Wi-Fi applications will offer industrial automation customers an unparalleled level of choice and expertise when devising future proof wireless solutions to best suit their plant needs.

“The process industry’s appetite for wireless applications continues to increase at an exponential rate, with needs extending far beyond field instruments,” said Raymond Rogowski, global wireless marketing director, Honeywell Process Solutions. “With Cisco’s wireless technology in HPS’ process control systems, new and existing customers in the oil & gas, refining, chemicals and power sectors will have the most comprehensive selection of products and services available to them when planning and implementing wireless network solutions at their facilities. Cisco’s position as a global leader in network technology also ensures that customers will always have the very latest technology at their fingertips.”

“The addition of Cisco’s access point to Honeywell’s wireless network offering continues the theme of OneWireless as a cost effective, plant-wide wireless mesh infrastructure capable of supporting technologically advanced applications such as rotating assets, VOIP, and security systems. As an industry leader, Honeywell is strategically committed to supporting the huge growth in industrial wireless applications, this access provides an additional pillar to moving the industry forward quickly.”

I think this is just another validation of Cisco as, in my opinion, THE market leader in Converged Networking, where we see Business and Plant/Manufacturing networks converging over time.

On the the final day of the EMEA HUG (Honeywell Users Group) this year, the comments were very positive:

“It is a sign of barriers coming down”, says Honeywell’s Diederik Mols, presenting with Cisco Systems’ Michael Fabian at HUG. “It’s a great step forward,” he says. “Every company has an IT infrastructure in the business environment but in the process area the engineers are responsible and the IT function has been excluded.”

However, wireless technology has changed that.

“The moment you’re leveraging the WiFi network for running mobile computing devices that’s IT’s core competence.” he adds.

Leading Manufacturers seem to be going faster than laggards when it comes to this technology, and that means there will be winners and loses in the manufacturing world – are you a winner? As always, let me know your view!
