Wi-Fi 6 or 5G – Why Choose One When You Can Have it All?

Do you remember life without Wi-Fi? With wireless innovation in its infancy when I was in college, I remember it more than most. Using Windows 98 PCs in the college library to check my email, only to find my inbox filled with chain mail. Dialing up to download “Sorry Ms. Jackson” on Napster – a process that would take all night. Going into the office on weekends with my brick of a laptop to plug into the corporate network.

Wireless became more mainstreamed in the mid-2000s, and here we are today, with it a vital part of our daily routines and work lives. The heavy reliance of wireless among enterprises and consumers has increased demand for greater speed and capacity. To meet those demands, the industry has been talking – pretty much non-stop – about the new Wi-Fi 6 and 5G standards, and how they are reshaping the Wi-Fi and cellular industries. Some of the questions that come to mind are:

  • Do you need Wi-Fi 6 with the promise of 5G’s increased coverage and download speeds between 1-10Gbps?
  • Will Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) really live up to its promises of 4x the performance of its predecessor, 802.11ac?
  • Will both standards hold up to the demands for greater speed and capacity, given the increased number of devices requiring more bandwidth than ever before?

Starting on April 29, Cisco will host a virtual event to discuss these questions, expectations for the wireless transition, top use cases new standards support, and new innovations that Cisco is delivering .. This 90-minute virtual event will include executives from Cisco; industry experts from the Farpoint Group, Packet Pushers, Intel, Samsung, and Boingo; and practitioners from Carnival Cruise Lines, Adventist Health, AB InBev, and Wild Rose School District. Register for a time that’s convenient for you, and you’ll get the chance to win one of many Samsung Galaxy S10 Wi-Fi 6-enabled phones. There will also be deep-dive demos and technical sessions available on-demand after the event. This is an event you won’t want to miss – please join us.
