Connecting Sichuan Program Transforms Healthcare and Education in China
In 2008, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake displaces 4.8 million residents and takes 68,000 lives in China’s Sichuan Province.
Following the 2008 earthquake, Cisco in partnership with the Chinese Government created a unique public-private partnership called Connecting Sichuan, a three-year, 45M corporate social responsibility program to revitalize the region, using ICT to connect healthcare professionals, transform schools, and prepare networking professionals to maintain a newly established communications infrastructure. Through the power of connected collaboration, the people of Sichuan Province are finding solid ground.
Last month marked the completion of the three-year program, presenting Cisco an opportunity to measure and examine its accomplishments.

Connecting Sichuan has transformed healthcare delivery in the region. Today, a remote local clinic can tap into patient records at a centralized data center, a doctor can share x-rays with a colleague thousands of miles away, and a village nurse can connect to specialists and diagnostic resources located at a regional hospital. When it comes to education, instructors and students can now access the vast educational resources available in the global learning community. And with over 5,300 newly trained graduates of Networking Academy, the region’s ICT capacity has kept up with multiplying demand.
