When Work Goes Beyond “Work” – Making the Human Connection

“What are we going to do? How are we going to keep in touch?” asked Laurie Leiker, the Director of Training and Development at Transcend Services.

Transcend is a leading provider of clinical documentation solutions for healthcare organizations. Located in Atlanta, GA, Transcend Services is a public company serving more than 250 hospitals and health systems, with a workforce of 1,950+ domestic medical language specialists (MLSs).

Interestingly, more than 75% of the employees at Transcend Services work offsite with 100% of the training department team working remotely. They use WebEx Training Center to keep in touch so despite their geographic distance, they are still close.

Life Happens, Creativity Ensues

Working remotely this is still a tight team. “We work together but we also care about each other outside of work,” Laurie explains.

When a maternity leave started before it was expected, the team got worried. The early exit caught everyone off guard. “We wanted to keep in touch with her, hear the stories and learn about how the final weeks of her pregnancy were progressing,” said Laurie. With everyone being remote, the idea of a traditional office baby shower wasn’t possible!

“What do we do?” Laurie thought. “How can we have a baby shower, see the gifts and enjoy this special time?”

For this team, the most logical answer was WebEx. They decided to have the baby shower online!

“This was a great experience and everyone was involved,” said Laurie. “We all were able to see each other,” she explained. Using WebEx, they were able to see each other’s reactions via webcam using Cisco WebEx’s high quality video.” The video feature also allowed us to see all of the beautiful gifts,” she added.

Share Video, Capture Memories

WebEx allows for up to 25 people to come together online where they can use web cams to see one another, share desktops and even record and preserve precious memories like a baby shower. Laurie concludes, “Most importantly, we had the opportunity to see our friend and colleague and share this special moment.”
