Oh, the Places You’ll Work

“You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So… get on your way!”

― Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

With the increasingly global nature of business, along with advancements in technology, employees are continually pushing the envelope in regard to how and where they work. Workers can connect and collaborate from anywhere such as their local coffee shop, on an airplane 35,000 feet in the air, to the mid-mountain cafeteria, after a morning of ski lifts and hand warmers.

According to a Cisco IBSG study released a few weeks ago, 84% of companies support several, if not all, devices. This added flexibility is allowing for better work/life balance, offering a way for workers to attend the mandatory annual planning meeting, without missing out on the last minute trip to the championship little league game. So how are we able to do it all? Collaboration on mobile has come a long way since you purchased your first cell phone.

Through collaboration technologies like Cisco’s Jabber, employees are able to stay in touch with colleagues via multiple mediums such as instant messaging, voice, video, telepresence, desktop sharing, and conferencing. Through smartphones, tablets and laptop devices, employees can access this suite of technologies from wherever they choose. The newest incarnation of these capabilities is Cisco Jabber for iPad (download from iTunes).

One of the oddest places I found myself using Jabber was on an aircraft carrier, literally. I have to admit it was in San Diego visiting the Midway – what a contrast between the communications technologies that this awesome ship had and what we enjoy now!

Jabber is enabling people to work from literally anywhere (think planes, trains, and – as safety and laws permit – automobiles), and allowing employees to be more productive wherever they are, on whatever device they choose. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and schedule that trip; you don’t have to miss a beat – no one will even know that there’s sand on your feet!

Where is the most unusual place you’ve ever worked?

  1. Quiet true! The freedom you have with tools like Jabber allows you to “work” around your life creating a much better work-life balance! My friends are envious when they see me use Cisco’s technologies to “Work my way”

  2. On a deserted beach in Tulum, Mexico.
And on a ski chair lift 🙂
