At Cisco, customer feedback and market reaction to our products are both appreciated and important. We’re constantly focused on how we can help customers deal with their business challenges while driving the market forward, and with a recent report by market research firm Dell’Oro Group, we have official market reaction that underscores how Cisco has made the right decisions for our customers.
According to Dell’Oro’s latest enterprise wireless LAN market share report, Cisco grew its market share (based on revenue) for the fourth consecutive quarter, rising significantly from 56.2% in the first quarter of calendar year 2010 to the current mark of 59.5% for Q4 of calendar year 2010.
The Dell’Oro report demonstrates how Cisco continues to lead the enterprise wireless LAN market, and shows how customers are responding strongly to innovative enterprise mobility solutions such as Cisco CleanAir technology for automated interference detection and mitigation. It’s no coincidence that Cisco’s increasing enterprise WLAN market share corresponds with the launch of CleanAir earlier in 2010. Driven by customer demand for highly reliable wireless networks, sales of the Aironet 3500 Series access points with CleanAir have accelerated our 802.11n market share growth. Recently, Cisco has delivered CleanAir technology into its outdoor portfolio with the introduction of the Aironet 1550 Series outdoor access point – delivering performance protection for 802.11n networks indoors and outdoors.
It’s also the rapidly growing industry adoption of 802.11n – and Cisco’s strong leadership role and continued investments – that is helping accelerate our market share growth. According to additional Dell’Oro research, 802.11n access points continue to drive the industry’s overall growth making up 51% of the total Enterprise WLAN market. Over the past four quarters, Cisco has gained 6.6% market share to reach a Q4 802.11n revenue share of 59.6% – over five times greater than our nearest competitor. With this data, it’s no surprise that Dell’Oro is also reporting that Cisco set an all-time revenue record in Q4 for enterprise WLAN sales reporting $375.9M.

The energy last week in Barcelona was electric. 61,000 people entered the halls of the Fira for Mobile World Congress 2011, and it was perfect timing for Cisco to unveil its Service Provider Wi-Fi solution. The critical need for offloading cellular data traffic to Wi-Fi is only growing, with Cisco’s Virtual Networking Index predicting global mobile data traffic will increase 26-fold between 2010 and 2015. In fact, Cisco provided free Wi-Fi coverage for approximately 10% of the Fira center, offloading over 1 TB of data to Wi-Fi in four days—and that was only 10% of the venue.
Convergence is everything. There were crowds of people using their smart devices – emailing, blogging, tweeting and texting between meetings. To provide seamless, everywhere connectivity Cisco announced the new Aironet 1550 Series Outdoor Access Point both with 802.11n and CleanAir technology. Interest at the show for this new product was strong. Mobile operators from around the globe stopped by the show floor to understand the solution offerings from Cisco.
Cisco CleanAir technology showcased how service providers could gain visibility into the RF spectrum to manage interference and prevent unexpected downtime. And most importantly, offers new levels of security, performance protection and policy enforcement.

Last week, Samsung’s MOBILE UNPACKED 2011 event brought a new level of collaboration between Cisco and the mobile device leader. Together, Cisco and Samsung announced a set of solutions designed to transform enterprise mobility, enabling organizations to leverage the wave of mobile devices coming through their doors.

Even if you’ve never worked in a hospital, or for that matter, have never seen an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “E.R.,” “General Hospital,” or even “Doogie Howser,” you can imagine the problem: an emergency has come up, but you can’t find a bed, an equipment cart, or other critical mobile medical supplies¸ and on top of that, an elderly patient has just wandered off. You’re frustrated that you can’t find the equipment you need, and you spend up to an hour a day trying to reach someone on your staff.
If you’re a hospital IT administrator, you’re already trying to squeeze every dollar out of your budget, trying to maximize your existing assets, yet you’re faced with these problems on a daily basis.
When hospitals aren’t able to locate equipment, they are forced to over-provision and hold replacement devices as reserves, causing high annual spending and leaving many devices underutilized. On average, hospitals over-procure 20-30% of their mobile assets and lose up to 15% of critical equipment each year1, with 85% of nurses spending 60 minutes per shift just searching for supplies and infusion pumps2 .
