Working Together in Healthcare: Addressing the Disparities in Access and Quality of Care
The U.S. health system is showing improvements on the majority of the federal government’s measures to improve healthcare quality, according to recently cited reports in an American Medical News article. And while it’s promising to see this positive traction, the reports also revealed that access to care still requires attention and improvement.
When it comes to addressing the disparity of access to quality care, telepresence can be a force to help the healthcare industry work together even more to improve the speed, quality and access of care by enabling virtual care consultation and scaling resources and expertise across multiple locations.
One example of how the medical community banded together and employed telepresence to move past issues related to access to care includes the efforts by the University of North Carolina (UNC) Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Designated by the National Cancer Institute as one of only 40 comprehensivecancer centers in the nation, the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center provides patients with access to state-of-the-art technology and resources for the treatment of cancer. For the many cancer patients in the state who do not live in the Chapel Hill area, getting to the Lineberger Center can take as much as four or five hours of driving — a major obstacle to receiving the high quality of care they need. The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center uses telepresence to deliver state-of-the-art cancer care to patients who would otherwise not have access.
