Happy Earth Day! How Are You Contributing?

earth dayDid you know that you could keep approximately 19 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions out of the atmosphere for each gallon of gas you don’t use? By itself that may not seem like a big number, but for those who commute 5 days a week, 20 days a month and around 260 days a year, that is a lot of carbon emissions.

Telecommuting has become increasingly popular at organizations around the world. Many are developing formal programs and seeing the benefits of increased employee productivity, improved morale and business continuity.  The Association of Commuter Transportation (ACT) reports that 83 percent of the Fortune 100 companies allow employees to telework, including companies such as Google, Microsoft, Genentech and Starbucks.

Making it Easier to Bring the Power of Video and Collaboration to Your Desktop

Trends like pervasive video and cloud computing are inherently changing the way we collaborate. Increasingly, organizations are looking for ways to enable rich interactions amongst employees, partners and customers.

To address this need, Cisco recently announced the Cisco Desktop Collaborate Experience DX650, an Android based phone that delivers traditional voice functionality, high-definition 1080p video, and many features commonly associated with today’s smartphones  straight to the desktop. This new next-generation Cisco IP phone extends the possibilities of desktop collaboration and delivers a reliable and high-quality audio and visual experience.

Snorre Kjesbu, vice president of Cisco Collaboration Endpoints Technology, recently took time out at Enterprise Connect to discuss the DX650. Read his post to hear more on Cisco’s newest endpoint, including what Snorre’s favorite feature is! A New Paradigm for Desktop Collaboration.

Video – The Great Equalizer in Future Tax Seasons

April 15th, what does this day mean to you?  For most U.S. citizens, it isn’t a day to look forward to.   That’s because it’s the day our taxes are due.  While it is part of our civic responsibility, I would venture to say that few people really enjoy the tax season; even CPAs are crazed during this time of year.  And it isn’t only the pain of cutting a check if you are one of the unfortunate ones who owes money; it is also the cumbersome process of getting your taxes done.

But I’ve noticed something a little different this tax season, ads about tax services are heavily focused on expertise vs. ease.  TurboTax, TaxAct, H&R Block, you name it, all seem to be promoting the credentials of their tax experts and the quality experience you will have when you engage with them.  This could be due to the added levels of complexity related to changes in rules and regulations from year to year, or it could be that people are having issues with accuracy.  Regardless, the “experts” promise a better experience.

An Intelligent Network Improves User and Operational Experience

Last year, it was my first time attending Enterprise Connect. It was exciting to share with customers for the first time how the network played a significant role in ensuring a successful video deployment. This year, we had the opportunity to demonstrate how troubleshooting could be greatly simplified with Cisco Medianet Media Monitoring capabilities embedded into endpoints and the network using Cisco Prime Collaboration. We also demonstrated how Cisco Medianet capabilities allow customers to effectively do more with the current network. For example, Cisco Jabber running on a laptop conveys information to a set of network nodes. The network, in turn, routes the traffic based on the information provided by Cisco Jabber and in this case the policy is to route desktop traffic over the backup link which is normally idle. This way, customers can maximize all existing network resources and delay expensive bandwidth upgrades while protecting business critical traffic from desktop video. Customers responded positively to the demos.
