In honor of Cisco’s presence at HIMSS 2012 this week, we thought we’d take a closer look at video in healthcare and what one of our most innovative customers is up to.

Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida is a great example of the many ways video can be used in healthcare. Moffitt has instilled the capture, transformation and sharing of video in its culture so that patients can “meet” many of the physicians, find answers for commonly asked questions, and even hear inspirational cancer survivor stories all on their Show and Share video portal.

Another example of using video in healthcare is providing extended care by scaling experts via video so that they can consult on patients not only in the hospital or clinic in which they are located, but all over the globe, including remote areas. This helps provide access to experts that might not usually be possible due to time or travel constraints.  Eventually, physician-to-patient services could even be provided to the home via video for appointments or questions that don’t require physically coming into the clinic.

The use of live and on-demand video for training and education is also a rapidly growing use case in many industries, including healthcare. Increasingly, healthcare institutions are finding that using video to demonstrate new procedures, provide policy updates, or facilitate mentoring helps to catalogue and share the knowledge of their physicians and staff.

Other top use cases for video in healthcare include hospital communications, safety and security, as well as administration and management.

  1. Two key areas we put in place at my last job delivering media at a healthcare organization were continuing medical education and annual compliance and HR mandatory training.

    With so much of the healthcare workforce working at off hours and dispersed locations, it’s critical that these key educational opportunities are made available regardless of location or time.

    We leveraged webcasting, recorded teleconferences, and full productions to make sure staff had the opportunity to view presentations and events they would likely have missed otherwise. In many cases we were even able to offer continuing education credits, a key need for the staff.
