All 802.11ac Vendors are the same…Right?

If you are an Enterprise IT Manager, this is a question that you must ask yourself if you are considering deploying 802.11ac for your enterprise wireless network. 802.11ac has some great benefits such as wirelike speed and being able to handle a high concentration of clients. However, there is more to consider when deploying 802.11ac. For instance, how do I handle RF interference now that 802.11ac support 80MHz channels? Will legacy devices such as 802.11g/a/n allow me to achieve the best performance that 802.11ac advertises? How can I ensure that my users get the best wireless performance when they roam across a building? And lastly, as more clients join the network, is my performance going to suffer? These are all valid concerns and are something that Cisco addresses with HDX. HDX is High Density Experience and is part of Cisco’s 802.11ac solution. We just wrapped up a 4 part blog series on HDX where we answer these questions:

–          For Interference Mitigation, we have CleanAir for 80MHz Channels

–          Getting the best performance out of your network even with legacy clients, we  have ClientLink 3.0 Read More »

How Next Generation WLAN Optimizes RoboCup at Bowdoin College

Bowdoin College is a liberal arts college based in the town of Brunswick, Maine. It houses 1839 students in about 100 buildings and offers 33 different majors and 4 minors. The Bowdoin IT Team are pioneering in nature as would be expected from the state whose motto, “Dirigo”, translates to “I lead”; adopting bleeding-edge best-in-class technologies to provide the optimal connected experience for students, faculty, staff and guests. This is counter-balanced with pragmatism in phasing the roll-out of these services.

This next generation pervasive WLAN network enables students to collaborate with each other anywhere on the campus and with the teachers in the classroom. In the previous blog in 2012, we described how Bowdoin upgraded to 3602 Access Points and used the innovative CleanAir technology tie-in with Event Driven Radio Resource Monitoring to optimize WLAN coverage. They also adopted the Cisco Prime and ISE 1.2 for manageability and consistent wired-wireless Policy respectively. In this blog, we will cover more details about the recent upgrade of the Wireless LAN Controller from the previous model WiSM to the new model 5760 and describe highlights of our conversation with Jason and Trevor about the WLAN deployment itself.

Setting New Wireless Venue Benchmark at the Fira de Barcelona

For many of us, conferences like Mobile World Congress are places where we learn about the latest technology and industry developments, network with our colleagues, and meet with customers and partners.  During that time, Wi-Fi connectivity is imperative to successfully communicate with other attendees and share the latest news with colleagues back home.

The Fira de Barcelona knows how important connectivity is for their conferences.  Since 1932, the Fira de Barcelona has been one of the most important trade fair institutions in Europe. Every year it organizes and hosts events spanning all aspects of the global business and social calendars.   Hosting global technology shows such as the annual Mobile World Congress means that Fira has to always be familiar with the latest advanced technology. That requirement came sharply into focus in September 2013 with the 49th meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). One of the four biggest annual medical conferences in Europe, it draws attendees from over 100 countries.

Building a Successful Mobility Roadmap

Recently, I was able to chat with Forbes contributor Dan Woods about how Cisco increases productivity and efficiency of its sales staff through a methodical approach to mobility.

Specifically, today’s mobile landscape is demanding constant evolution. From listening and responding to the mobility needs of employees to deploying home-grown apps, a flexible and holistic roadmap for mobility and mobile apps is essential. While mobility continues to be a growing trend that offers businesses new opportunities, many companies have yet to fully realize the true potential of mobility.

With this in mind, many business leaders may ask:

  • How can my enterprise recreate Cisco’s approach to mobility success?
  • How can my organization realize all of the benefits a mobility strategy can offer?

cisco_blog_mcKittrick_imageFinal (2)Why Mobility Matters

You don’t have to look very far – probably the nearest airport lounge, coffee shop, or even living room – to see how the influx of smart, connected devices is changing how and where we work.

However, basic BYOD and mobility policies are becoming more comprehensive in order to support emerging trends like the rise of enterprise apps and demand for a faster and personalized user experience. In fact, according to a CIOL article, CIOs will continue to put mobile first, understand and invest in mobile enterprise apps, and integrate corporate mobility policies in the next year.

In addition, mobility – and its untapped potential – is shaping the bottom line.

A recent CIO Insight article sheds some light: A survey from Mobile Helix supports that CIOs and IT leaders recognize there is untapped business value potential from investing in mobility. Read More »
