Bringing Up a New Branch Site the Easy Way with Prime Infrastructure – Part 2

Last week, I shared with you how to set up WAN networking with Cisco Prime Infrastructure. Today, as the second blog of my 5-part blog series, I’m going to discuss with you how to connect your branch site users to the LAN and wireless network with Prime. Before I go further, just as a quick heads up, here’s my weekly blog series plan on how to set up networking with Prime for a new branch site.

Your new branch router is up and running. Cisco IWAN is working beautifully. You can’t wait to connect your branch users to their LAN and wireless access network. Mobility is what everyone automatically counts on these days. Cisco forecasts an 18-fold growth in mobile traffic from wearable devices along from 2015 to 2019. Meantime, wired LAN is still critical. IP phones, printing and some business functions depend on rock solid wired LAN access. You want to set up your wired and wireless access for success. A big challenge is how to keep it simple and easy to manage. Read More »

Converged Access Improves Wireless Performance at South Island School, Hong Kong

South Island School in Hong Kong is made up south island school 2of students from around the world, with 1,400 students from over 35 countries. One value that sets the school apart is its commitment to using technology in the classroom. For instance, every student has a laptop that they use to access e-books, watch educational videos, and complete homework assignments. Some exams are even taken digitally.

With wireless devices used daily by every student and faculty member, a stable network connection is almost as important as pencil and paper in classrooms. South Island School’s existing Cisco network had reached end of life, and the school needed to refresh the infrastructure with a network that could meet bandwidth needs for years to come.

“We looked at other vendors, but we were extremely impressed with how the existing Cisco equipment performed over the years,” says Victor Alamo, ICT manager at South Island Schools. “By upgrading to the latest Cisco access points and switches, we’d have an infrastructure that would keep up with our needs.” Read More »

Telefónica and Cisco Personalize the Consumer Experience at Mobile World Congress

On March 2 at Mobile World Congress, Robert Franks, Managing Director, Digital Commerce at Telefónica UK and Cisco’s Kelly Ahuja, SVP, Service Provider Business, Products & Solutions, had a standing-room only crowd as part of the “Personalizing the Consumer Experience” keynote.

During their session, they emphasized how they could understand the consumer as a digital stream of information, not simply isolated pieces of information.  That stream of information, combined with in-person location details, can help both service providers and enterprises improve the experience for their consumer customers.  Both Kelly and Robert recognized that the data has always been available, but it wasn’t easily accessible.  Now Telefónica and Cisco are working together to find ways to use that information to provide a better experience for consumers.

Kelly summarized it well by stating that “personalization is going to be the key to determine the consumer experience.”  Audience members agreed with what was said in real-time tweets.

Let’s talk about the new Cisco WAP131

It is now March. It actually hailed here in Huntington Beach, but we’ll call it snow for the novelty. It’s always neat to see things like this happen here in Southern California mainly because things like snow rarely seems to happen. We freak out on rainbows. Get the picture?

Well to keep things sane here locally, I asked my brethren Wireless Product Manager, Nasser Tarazi to take a few minutes to talk about his new Cisco WAP131.

Here’s a few nuggets about the new WAP131:

The new WAP131

  • The WAP131 supports concurrent dual band radios for improved coverage and performance
  • Designed for Desktop/tabletop deployment
  • It can be powered by a PoE Switch using the WAP131’s PoE ethernet port, meaning less cabling demands for deployment
  • Works out of the box
  • Quick and easy deployment
  • Free feature upgrades
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • A good product to replace the popular WAP4410N

Simply put, this new wireless access point is a perfect upgrade for those who were previously using a single wireless router (network-in-a box) for their small business networking needs. Nasser adds, “We are providing our customers with affordable yet highly reliable, secure wireless solutions. The new Cisco WAP131 is yet another example”.

Quick note, Nasser’s son used his GoPro to video this piece, pretty good for his first attempt. Maybe the next video we will show Nasser snowboarding!

That is all for now. Thank you for spending some time with us.

Summary: Drive Customer Engagement with Analytics and Insights – the Next Wave of CMX Innovation

CES and NRF kicked off 2015 with a bang, and as usual, showed us that there is no shortage of gadgets and dashboards to help businesses solve their every need.

From an IT perspective, choosing the right tools to solve each technology challenge should involve a full evaluation the merits of feature sets, while balancing the (rapidly shrinking) budget. But the business doesn’t wait – IT is flanked by consumer-mindset-driven employees and visionary execs eager to stay on top of buzz words like Big Data and Analytics.

Not coincidentally, we’re witnessing IT budgets shift over to Line of Business (LoB), a clear nod towards the business relevance of digital engagement.

In fact, 44% of mobility initiatives are now either completely funded or jointly funded by Line of Business (LoB) leaders.

This is a great opportunity for IT to align with LoB interests and drive programs that allow LoB and IT to successfully deliver business outcomes together using technology.
