Announcing: New Catalyst 3850 SFP Fiber Switch Models Expand Cisco Unified Access

May 19, 2014 at 5:30 am PST

Catalyst 3850 FiberOver a year ago, Cisco launched its first flagship Catalyst 3850 series switches at Cisco Live London. With its integrated wireless LAN controller functionality and the innovative UADP ASIC, the Catalyst 3850 switches provide a converged wired and wireless platform that is the heart of “One Network” in the Cisco Unified Access “One Policy. One Management. One Network” approach.

Today, we are excited to announce an addition to the Cisco Catalyst 3850 series switch family: the new Catalyst 3850 1G SFP fiber switch models. They are new SKUs in the Catalyst 3850 switch family and they help further expand the Cisco Unified Access solution. I’ll explain how later, but first let me help you get familiar with this new product offering.

The new Catalyst 3850 SFP fiber switch models have nearly everything identical with their sibling access switches in the Catalyst 3850 switch family: Read More »

Catalyst 3650 Delivers High Quality User Experience with Simplicity

October 10, 2013 at 5:00 am PST

The network at my workplace is getting really fast these days. I cannot believe that as soon as I hit “Download” to pull a 50 MB

video file from a server to my laptop, the browser immediately says “Download is complete.” Wait, isn’t that supposed to take a few minutes, or at least a few seconds? Wireless is also getting dramatically better. Not too long ago, wireless was “nice to have” and only as a secondary means of network support. Today everyone’s expectation is that “wireless has to work”. Whether I plug in to my wired docking station, or move to a conference room with wireless, everything just works equally well. Is that your experience, too? If not, the newly announced Catalyst 3650 switch will make that happen for you very soon. There’s much more to it, but supporting gigabit desktop and 802.11ac is just a simple example of how the Catalyst 3650 can dramatically enable high quality user experience.

Several years ago, Cisco anticipated rapid growth of high demand on the network and mobile device surge in the workplace that are taking place today. That is why Cisco designed and executed on a Unified Access strategy to bring wired and wireless networks together with superior performance and consistency. At the heart of the technology is the Cisco Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) ASIC that enables wired-wireless convergence right on the network edge, with the enforcement of necessary security and management policies.

Why is wired-wireless convergence so critical, you ask?

More from London – Unified as ONE

February 7, 2013 at 9:16 am PST

BugEyes
I was really impressed with Cisco Live London..for those of you who took the time to shake our hand and say hello…THANK YOU!  You make us feel like geek rock stars!  Good thing the doors are really big at these conferences so my inflated ego could still make it through.  I mentioned our Fundamentals of Converged Wireless and Wireless Access yesterday…but there are a few more detailed videos surrounding this Unified Access Launch that were definitely worth mentioning.

First off -- Jimmy Ray gets with Muhammad Imam so that he can demonstrate the new controls for QoS on wired or wireless now.

We circle back with another friend, Sachin Gupta, to hear what kind of feedback we are getting back from both geeks and others who have actually already deployed the Catalyst 3850. The pricing is extremely attractive on this…no extra cost even though this is a HUGE revolution from the previous 3700 series.

Perhaps a bit overshadowed, but really should not be overlooked, are the changes we see within the 5760. As the first IOS based Wireless LAN Controller -- this new release has identical commands for configuration and management as you do with the 3850. Great example of the ONE Network we speak of now on such a regular basis.

Cisco is a Leader in the 2012 Gartner Wired & Wireless Magic Quadrant with a Policy-Guided Approach to Today’s Networks

In the past few years a number of paradigm shifts have made policy-based networking essential to effective enterprise IT management. Some of these shifts include an increased reliance on virtualization and the cloud; the “consumerization” of business networks that has occurred with the popularity of devices such as tablets and smartphones; and the rapid adoption of video in business communications. By applying appropriate policies within the network, IT managers can do a better job of meeting users’ expectations and become business enablers.

We believe our message of One Policy, One Management and One Network has been recognized in the recent Gartner 2012 Wired and Wireless LAN Infrastructure Magic Quadrant, where Cisco has been positioned as a leader.

Foundational to Cisco’s One Policy strategy is the Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), which enables organizations to create and deploy unified policy to address the need for BYOD compliance. ISE enables one consistent policy across the entire enterprise, as well as enforcement by correlating a unique combination of contextual information including user, device, location and time.
