Powerful API’s Unlock Location-based Services

We’ve all been there, seen it, and even done it ourselves. We’re talking or texting on our phones while walking around the isles of our favorite store. Half the time people are in a venue they’re more fixated on what’s happening on their phone than what’s around them. What about those brick and mortars around us? How can they get our attention when our noses are in our devices?

Cisco’s Visual Networking Index: Understanding the Evolution of Internet Users, Devices and Connections

Today’s networks are an essential part of business, education, government, and home communications. Many residential, business, and mobile Internet Protocol (IP) networking trends are being driven largely by the combination of video, social networking, and advanced collaboration applications, termed “visual networking.”  In fact, total Internet traffic has experienced dramatic growth in the past decade alone. Take a look at this interactive infographic from Cisco that shows key trends and forecasts the growth of global IP traffic from 2013 to 2018. You can choose a category and filter the geographic regions in the map to view the impact of global IP traffic. According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index (VNI), globally, there will be 20.6 billion networked devices by 2018, up from 12.4 billion in 2013. VNI is part of Cisco’s ongoing effort to forecast and analyze the growth and use of IP networks worldwide. VNI also forecasts that global Internet Protocol (IP) traffic will increase nearly three-fold over the next five years due to more Internet users and devices, faster broadband speeds and increased video viewing. Global IP traffic for fixed and mobile connections is expected to reach an annual run rate of 1.6 zettabytes – more than one and a half trillion gigabytes per year by 2018.

Carrier Wi-Fi for the Retail of Tomorrow

When we first started developing Cisco Connected Mobile Experiences several years ago, we had a vision that carrier-grade Wi-Fi could change how we interact with public environments.  We knew that the rich information that Wi-Fi provides indoors could enhance our experiences while shopping, watching sports, attending conventions, going to museums, and seeing shows.

It is so exciting to see this vision coming to life all around us.  One of the latest examples is the beautiful Stary Browar Mall in Poznań Poland.  Stary Browar is more than a mall.  It’s designed as a 50/50 combination of art and retail space, and the two come together to provide a unique shopping experience that can’t be found on the Internet.

Smart Cities Are a $7.5 Billion Annual Opportunity for Technology Providers

Cities around the globe are beginning to build out new digital services such as smart lighting, traffic, waste management and data analytics to reduce costs, tap new sources of revenue, create new innovation business districts and improve the overall quality of urban life. The previous blog (“How to Make Money from Smart Cities”) identified the great opportunities for the technology vendors and partners to help to create and operate these digitally smart cities of the future.

The Cisco Smart City Business Architecture identifies a set of essential requirements in a number of different business layers essential for delivering and operating a successful smart city initiative.  In order to measure this opportunity, we developed a detailed economic model based on the business architecture.  We chose Seattle in the USA as a representative city, with roughly 3 million people in the greater metropolitan area, to quantify the potential opportunity available to technology providers.  Our model smart city initiative included covering 30 per cent of the city area with a Wi-Fi network and four key smart city solutions -- traffic incident management, smart lighting, smart parking, safety & security.  In addition, we included the technology platforms, operational capabilities, and services in the Smart City Business Architecture. All of the services and solutions were modeled as managed services, generating an annual revenue stream to the provider. Read More »
