Remember the time when we were trying to figure out exactly what the Internet was? Web pages and dot coms didn’t make complete sense. Wow, how times have changed. Today, our world revolves around the Internet. Most of us connect every day. And now, we are doing more than just connecting.
Our team recently joined other industry experts at HITEC 2013, the world’s largest hospitality technology show. Hot topics discussed at the show included the next generation guest, including BYOC (bring your own content), social media, Wi-Fi services, data security, mobility and more. But one topic stood out among the others – the next big innovation cycle for hoteliers.
So what is the next big innovation cycle for hoteliers?
The one thing about innovation in hotels that stands out to me right now is that it’s almost a constant two-way dialogue between the hotel and guest. When we leverage the network beyond just connecting to the Internet, the possibilities are nearly endless. This two-way dialogue creates an opportunity to better serve customer needs. And if we pay attention to guests’ dialogue and understand their daily physical and digital habits and desires, there is no more assuming what those needs are. By constantly gathering data to determine future needs, we can create a system that not only is a solution, but can help determine solutions for the future. Read More »

In the decade or so that Wi-Fi has existed, most technologists and mobile industry executives viewed it as the “poor cousin” to licensed mobile communications. Now mobile operators around the world are asking how they can effectively use Wi-Fi to help them cope with the huge surge in mobile data traffic and to meet customer needs and expectations. In addition, they are all eager to understand how they can make money from Wi-Fi and to make the business case to justify investments in deploying Wi-Fi networks.
As many leading SPs are now discovering building a Wi-Fi network creates not only significant business value, but creates a virtuous circle that leads to ever-increasing sources of new Wi-Fi value. As the Wi-Fi Monetization Virtuous Circle outlined below shows, the reinforcing network and scale effects of Wi-Fi investments not only deliver unique business benefits at each of the levels, but also establish a valuable platform to exploit additional monetization opportunities at the next level.

Live Webinar on 802.11ac in Healthcare July 16, 10am | Register Now
With any new wireless technology, much of what is initially written in the first year is usually focused around the bits and bytes and the speeds and feeds of the technology. This is true for 802.11ac where any Google search will yield a plethora of articles on the potential of Gigabit wireless or that it runs on the 5GHz band and could have up to 8 spatial streams. However, the conversations must start moving towards discussing how the technology can be used in practical situations. In the case of our 802.11ac Module for the 3600, we feel very strongly that it is necessary to not only talk about the speeds and feeds of 802.11ac, but also show how a customer plans to use 802.11ac.
That’s why at our popular presentation at Cisco Live! Orlando, we first discussed the 802.11ac Standard, Cisco’s 802.11ac solution and how it can be used in various networks, and then invited representatives from Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX to discuss their experience to date with 802.11ac. Is there anything more annoying than a frozen screen? Imagine a teacher or student trying to utilize wireless technology on campus only to be let down by slow or spotty wireless coverage. School districts cannot leverage a wireless network with performance issues. Hot spots are no longer good enough: there is a requirement for pervasive wireless access in today’s classrooms. Only with pervasive wireless access can technology be fully utilized to help innovate the classroom, whether it’s through access to online teaching tools, real time communication or other student engagement vehicles. Cisco BYOD Solutions for K12 Education offer flexible solutions that make a pervasive wireless network an affordable reality.
A pervasive wireless network opens up anytime, anywhere access to enhanced teaching and learning resources. An overwhelming 94% of teachers say Google or other search engines tops the list of sources their students use for research*.

As I partake in Cisco Live! activities, I wonder how the network team handles the thousands of geeks with their 3-4 geek toys each connecting to Wi-Fi from anywhere around the convention center. I know a thing or two about how they went about planning, but hey, there is always Murphy’s Law that creeps up and nothing (always) works as planned…surprise surprise… think about the size of this conference and the World of Solutions (trade show floor) where so many of the partners want to show off their latest and greatest capability by setting up their own network. BAM: you have interference of all kinds all over the place. It’s a good thing the AP’s that are deployed have Cisco CleanAir® Technology to automatically classify and mitigates the interference. But wouldn’t it be great to be able to visualize the interference and the RF?
Enter visualization and Metageek.
It doesn’t take long for someone in the wireless industry to know that Metageek’s geeks know a thing or two about giving sizzle to RF and packets. We’ve certainly been around long enough, so that’s why we’ve been working with Metageek to cook up the Chanalyzer Pro with Cisco CleanAir® , the industry’s most advanced spectrum intelligence technology with the industry’s most visually captivating and comprehensive RF analysis tool. Perhaps you caught yesterday’s press release?
