The explosion of mobile devices has changed the way we work, live, and play. Gone are the days of being tethered to PC’s in our home offices or desktops at work. We can now literally take our job on the road and access our desktops and applications from anywhere, anyplace, anytime.
On the road again..
Two years ago, I was a part–time contractor at Cisco and thought it was pretty cool to have the choice to telework and perform my job remotely from any location. With a trusty laptop running my virtual desktop, I was able to be mobile, do my job as a Cisco employee with meetings via WebEx, meet other clients and, take my son to his baseball practices – all with the freedom and flexibility of work life balance Cisco provides.
Desktop virtualization moves data, voice, and video productivity applications now used on phones and computers onto servers in the data center. This creates a nimble virtual workspace for any agency user who can access their virtual desktop they choose from any device they bring or own in support of their agency’s policy of BYOD.

In a recent study conducted by Cisco WebEx by Wakefield Research, small business owners will spend up to four weeks working remotely. They will do by using online tools and web collaboration to stay in touch and get the job done. The survey was conducted between June 6 and June 14, involving the owners of businesses with 100 or fewer employees.
Summer may be the time for vacations, but small business owners can’t afford to be away from the office for long. To make the most of work and personal time, many plan to work remotely, on average, 18 days this summer, according to the survey of 500 U.S. small business owners.
One way to get it done is with a free basic account from WebEx.
15% say they intend to work remotely 36 days or more. Read More »

Rely on the trusty Internet Business Services Group within the Cisco to come up with insightful research nuggets on how we all really work. Their latest IBSG Horizons Study, “The Everywhere Employee“, gives some fascinating detail on the dollars and sense underlying the idea of working “your way”.
Most interesting to me, of course, is the part about telecommuting. Did you know that 44% of knowledge workers telecommute at least one day a week? And that this one day a week alone saves companies $2,400 a year per employee?
So let’s do the math (my favorite part). In a 10,000 person company, 4,400 employees work one day a week from somewhere else, which translates to a whopping $11 million a year. Enough to pay for some nice executive bonuses!
This pairs nicely with the findings of a study Stanford University professors published in November 2011, “Does Working from Home Work?”. They gave an emphatic “yes” and also ran the numbers specific to their use case (which examined full-time telecommuters), located in Appendix A4.
So how does this relate to video? In every way possible. Not only can you use a nice, sleek EX90 TelePresence unit on your home office desk, you can use Jabber video on your tablet. Or take your laptop into the neighborhood coffeeshop and join the video-based Webex meeting (just please remember to mute: coffee grinders are loud).
See you on video!
