May 2, 2012 at 11:01 am PST

This blog comes at the request of a tweet from @AlisonScammell.

“I’m looking at #webinar ice breaker ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions? #webex”

What a great question!

WebEx is incredibly useful for online meetings, but bringing a group of people together across time zones in remote locations can present some challenges when it comes to warming up the room. We posted some tips last week for adding color to your meetings which creates a mood. And we’ve talked about using polls and the whiteboard.

But what else can you do to get things moving? Here are 15 ideas that we think are well suited for online meetings or webinars. Read More »

BYOD, Social Media and New Cloud Consumption Models

Bringing You the Workplace Revolution

Kids get sick, cars malfunction, pipes break, bad-hair days occur, and the list goes on. Life simply happens.  But thanks to technology, it no longer means the end of the world for that work day. With a rapidly growing change in workplace ideologies like BYOD (Bring your own device), and technologies like TelePresence, Jabber and WebEx, I have the ability to work almost anywhere at any time, even if things prevent me from getting to the office that day.

Given the explosion of social media technologies in the past few years, it only makes sense that BYOD is taking off like a firestorm—even among small businesses—as covered in two recent blogs,  ‘Business Ready: On the Go and in the Clouds’ and ‘Supersizing Your Small Business.’  In fact, the Cisco Connected World Technology Report found that two of five college students and young employees would accept a lower-paying job that had more flexibility with BYOD, social media access, and mobility than a higher-paying job with less flexibility. So what about those at companies with very little flexibility when it comes to devices? Seven out of ten employees knowingly break IT policies on a regular basis, and three out of five believe that it is not their responsibility to keep the company secure. The bottom line: the workplace revolution is happening (and it’s being video streamed on your mobile device).

He recorded a fantastic talk via WebEx about his experiences getting kids excited about technology in education. His enthusiasm is contagious as he passionately discusses the results of his efforts.

Woz, as he is affectionately known, is a huge supporter of teachers and education. He speaks of his great experiences in school as a child and his incredible respect for his teachers and the schools that he attended.

He acknowledges that testing has its problems, that it’s not as powerful as a subjective judgment. He’d rather see a way to evaluate students that takes into account the individual and his or her talents and needs.

Five Things You Can Do To Support Your Team Right Now

April 24, 2012 at 11:39 am PST

It’s not enough just to hire the best people for your business; good managers become their guide, coach and cheerleader as well.

Your employees want to do well and you have the opportunity to help them. Here are five things you can do to encourage them. When you are getting the best out of everyone on your team, you will also succeed.

1. Give Your Team a Clear Purpose

How your business performs is by and large dependent on its people, and those people need to know that their individual goals are helping move the company forward.

Derek Johnston, senior executive at the Centre for Competitiveness, recommends that all team members need to know exactly what they are trying to do, just as a sports team agrees what the objective is (get the ball in the net, cross the line first). This is one of the first things you can do to make team members work effectively.
