Why I love working trade shows like Microsoft TechEd for Cisco

June 5, 2013 at 7:19 am PST

I have lost count of the number of trade shows I’ve worked over my career. But working trade shows for Cisco over the past 14 months has been a uniquely positive experience. Microsoft TechEd North America 2013 makes my 5th show evangelizing Cisco UCS and our solutions.

I have been able to have long (sometimes up to 45 minutes) conversations with potential customers who have heard about UCS and want to learn more. Their reactions on how Cisco does it differently from others in the industry is an eye-opener for them – whether it the technology or the economics of the solution. They all walk away saying they are going to have to dig deeper into our solutions and contact their account team / partner.

It has become almost embarrassing the amount of praise our current customers heap on us when they come by the booth. Embarrassing because I’m just a very small part of what makes UCS successful; Cisco has a very strong team behind UCS and I wish they all could hear the great things the customers are saying about their experiences.

There are still two days left to stop by the Cisco booth and learn about:

  • UCS
  • UCS Solutions FlexPod, VSPEX, Exchange, SQL Server
  • UCS Manager
  • Nexus 1000V
  • VM FEX
  • Cisco Email Security

Cisco Datacenter Solutions at Microsoft TechEd North America 2013

May 29, 2013 at 4:00 am PST

Please visit Cisco’s TechEd web site to learn more about what we have going on at the show and visit www.cisco.com/go/microsoft to learn more about Cisco’s Microsoft capabilities.

I first attended Microsoft TechEd in 1996 in Los Angeles. What a learning experience it was.

This year, I’ll be there staffing the Cisco booth (#1701) speaking about the Cisco Unified Computing System.

  • Do you run SQL, Exchange, SharePoint or other Microsoft applications?
  • Want to learn about the x86 server technologies and solutions that have propelled Cisco to the #2 blade server vendor in the Americas and #3 worldwide1 in only 3 years?
  • Would you like to see how you can have common set of management tools for your rack and blade servers that provide the missing hardware insight layer, with visibility from the chassis and rack all the way through to the virtual machine layer?
  • Are you interested in a turn-key solution for your private cloud (FlexPod & VSPEX)?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, stop by and speak with the UCS server team.

Cisco will also be demonstrating:

Both the Nexus 1000V and FlexPod are finalist for the Best of TechEd 2013. We are very hopeful this will be our third year in a row to win a Best of TechEd award.

Cisco UCS – Quintessential Fabric-based computing – Part 3

In Part 1 of this blog series, we looked at Gartner’s definition of Fabric based infrastructure (FBI). In part 2, we explored the benefits of service profiles and automation of server management. In this last installment, we will look into the benefits of fabric extension to virtual machines.

According to an IDC report (New Economic Model for the Data Center), the rate of growth of virtual machines is much higher than physical machines.  The life cycle of virtual machines is more dynamic than physical servers. Virtual machines may need to be moved from one network to another for data access.  Additionally, typical deployments of virtual machines have an extra layer of switching in the hypervisor.  The software switches in the hypervisor emulate hardware at the expense of application performance. Cisco UCS solves these problems with the Cisco Virtual Interface cards (VICs) acting as adapter fabric extenders (fig 1) and bringing the network to virtual machines (VMs).

FEX

Another problem is that network administrators have no control on the soft switches in the hypervisor, which makes monitoring of network traffic to individual VMs very cumbersome. Cisco VICs use the VN-Tag standard in IEEE 802.1 BR standard to manage each link from the VM as if it were a Read More »

What’s Cisco Doing for Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012 SP1?

March 15, 2013 at 8:15 am PST

We’re doing quite a bit actually…if you’re headed to the Microsoft Management Summit 2013 show in Las Vegas in a few weeks, stop by our booth, grab a t-shirt, and see us demo our UCS Manager and Nexus 1000V capabilities and more…

Cisco’s technology investments for Windows Server 2012 & System Center 2012 center primarily on the hardware, management and networking segments with our  UCS, UCS Manager, Cisco PowerTool, Nexus 1000V, and VM-FEX offerings. These investments help to drive simplification and automation for you – saving time and money.

Nexus 1000V Provides Cloud Switching to New Windows Server 2012 Platform

September 4, 2012 at 4:39 pm PST

Windows Server 2012 logoToday marks the general availability of the eagerly-awaited Microsoft Windows Server 2012 platform.  According to Microsoft, “Windows Server 2012 redefines the server category, delivering hundreds of new features and enhancements spanning virtualization, networking, storage, user experience, cloud computing, automation, and more.”  Earlier Cisco blog posts discussed how Cisco has collaborated with Microsoft to achieve Windows 2012 certification for our UCS servers, as well as integrating our management tools into Microsoft System Center and PowerShell.

Microsoft Build Conference 2011 - Demo of Nexus 1000V virtual switchIn this post, I’d like to highlight the integration of the Nexus 1000V virtual switch into the Windows Server 2012 platform, and particularly the Hyper-V hypervisor. We have been working closely with the Windows Server 2012 team for the past few years towards this goal, and announced Nexus 1000V and VM-FEX support for it at the Microsoft BUILD conference last year.  Read More »
