Cisco & Telecom New Zealand Test Cisco EPC with LTE-A Category 6

To think that the number of connected devices will grow to possibly 10 billion by 2018 with some forecasts as high as 40 billion connected devices by 2020, that is mindboggling. That means that there will be about 10 connected devices for every man, woman and child on the planet.

While most of the connected devices will only send a few characters and then go silent, people like you and I who own the mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, wearable devices) the need for speed is still very much a requirement.

The Test

So recently Telecom New Zealand performed a series of networking tests with Cisco leveraging LTE-A or LTE-Advanced. As a key LTE-A technology, carrier aggregation allows for full utilization of operators’ spectrum resources, empowering them to provide faster mobile broadband experiences including video conferencing, high-definition content transmission, high-speed video downloads, social networking and more.

NTT Docomo Virtualizing the Mobile Packet Core with Cisco

1Did you know in Japan, 90% of mobile phones are waterproof because youngsters use them even in the shower?

Did you know that Japan consists of over 6,800 islands?

Did you know Japan suffers 1,500 earthquakes every year.

In Japan Mobile data traffic grew 92% in 2012 and 66% from 3Q 2012 to 3Q 2013, according to Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

According to the GSMA estimates for Machine-To-Machine (M2M), ten countries account for 70% of all M2M connections as of year-end 2013, comprising China, the US, Japan, Brazil, France, Italy, the UK, Russia, Germany and South Africa.

So what is the problem? Well as you can see the people of Japan will take and use their mobile devices anywhere and at any time. The country is geographically dispersed, and earthquakes occur all of the time (mostly very small). All along the amount of mobile traffic is growing at an astounding rate with no signs of slowing down, with the M2M industry just beginning. So what is an operator like NTT Docomo supposed to do?

What’s the solution? NTT Docomo has Read More »

Cisco Carrier-Grade Virtualization for Mobile Operators

Wow how time flies, three months ago there was snow and cold weather in Boston but at the same time it was quite hot at the 2014 MWC. Hot from all of the discussions on Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Orchestration were on everyone’s minds, as both mobile operators and vendors try to answer the question “How to handle Machine-to-Machine (M2M), Internet-Of-Things (IOT) and the 50 Billion new devices by 2020”.

Fast forward to today and NFV & Orchestration Proof Of Concepts (POC) are being requested by or being inserted in every mobile operators network. Many of whom will be publically launching in specific application areas like M2M soon, and several operators are evaluating insertion into their main network sooner than expected.

Cisco – Thales Win 2014 Coveted Global Telecom Business Innovations Award

Jim O'Leary Written By Jim O’ Leary, Senior Mobile Solutions Marketing Manager

What a great week to be in London last week, the weather was great with blue skies and warm weather. The main reason this week to be in London was to attend the annual Global Telecoms Business Summit and Innovations Awards, and what a great industry event it was. During the event there were lots of customer interactions, industry discussions & best practices, and the Innovation Awards.

thalesThe Global Telecom Business Summit and Innovation Awards is an annual event that celebrates innovative solutions created by telecom vendors together with operators to make a difference to the world. Cisco and Thales won the award for Business Service Innovation for “LTE Enhancing the Safety and Security Industry Market” where we leveraged Cisco’s Industry Leading LTE Solution and Thales’ industry leadership in Security Systems Integration.

What is the problem that we identified? The Safety & Security Industry leverages the Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) which is currently in the process of transitioning towards Broadband over the next few years.

Cisco Quantum Virtualized Packet Core: Automated and Orchestrated

By Jim O’Leary, Senior Mobile Solutions Marketing ManagerJim O'Leary

So last week I attended the mobile industry’s World Cup or Super Bowl, the 2014 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The GSMA has just reported that more than 85,000 visitors from 201 countries attended the 2014 MWC attended the 4 day event, setting another new record. Every mobile operator, systems integrator, software and hardware vendor that touched the mobile industry was there. People were everywhere and all I can say was wow….

MWC Hot Topics that companies presented were on monetization, virtualization, and supersizing network components. With all of the hundreds of customers that I had the chance to speak with, virtualization and orchestration were really key areas for them. They came into our booth to speak with us, often confused as to them it seemed every vendor in attendance spoke about virtualization or orchestration, which often led operators to think that any vendor can do it. As many operators that have been evaluating this space for a while have found is that animated slides are easy to do but orchestrating and virtualizing a network is not. If you take a product that was just and “okay product”, then virtualize it, then you have a “virtualized okay product” and sometimes still tied to proprietary hardware.

According to Akshay Sharma, research director at Gartner, the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) market is Read More »
