Collaboration is indeed the business opportunity of the decade, promising to energize your organization while making more effective use of your precious assets. My Cisco colleague Carl Wiese and I wrote a book called The Collaboration Imperative: Executive Strategies for Unlocking Your Organization’s True Potential to help organizations “operationalize” collaboration and capture these gains. Our goal wasn’t to write a “theory” book, but rather one that drills down into specific actions, with concrete examples of how to put collaboration to work in the real world.
As Carl noted in a previous post, effective collaboration is a function of aligning culture, process and technology. But how do you do that? Here is a one example from the book: Collaborative teams work best when they’re made up of people who communicate openly.
Collaboration technologies, especially video, make it easy to reach people across an organization and around the world. Anyone who has traded their economy-class airline seat in favor of a Telepresence meeting knows the powerful benefits of collapsing space and time with an engaging video meeting. However, as we cross departmental, cultural and time-zone boundaries, collaboration puts our personal communication skills to the test.
As we increasingly interact virtually, we work more and more with people we don’t know or have a long history with; they may actually work in a different company and teams may come and go in rapid succession. Establishing rapport –- quickly –- is one of the most important aspects of successful collaboration, and it starts with communicating authentically.
There’s a different kind of college freshman on university campuses these days. According to EdWeek’s report on The American Freshman: National Norms Fall 2011 survey, today’s freshman bears more of the cost of his or her own education than did past first-year college students, and, as a high school senior, today’s freshman paid more attention to his or her studies than those who came before.
So what does this mean for colleges?
For one, today’s students’ higher academic engagement could translate into demand for more innovative, challenging courses. But with the survey showing more students taking out large student loans as their parents’ unemployment rates remain stagnant, universities cannot raise tuition price tags to hire more faculty to develop new classes. Technology makes all of us smile this holiday season
As we wrap up our holiday time away, I thought it a great time to reflect on the gift we often forget about … spending time with our loved ones and the ability to make each other smile….
These days we constantly talk about how technology in healthcare settings makes us more efficient, more collaborative and more patient-centric. I don’t hear much, however, about how it makes us SMILE. Today I have found the exception: Santa, connecting live via video, to chat with a hospitalized child. Smiles erupt from the child, parent, and staff alike – not to mention Santa himself.
Such is the scene at 15 hospitals across the U.S. the last couple of weeks. As a nurse and caregiver, it touches my heart to know that despite all that medicine and technology offer today, we can’t cure everyone as soon as we would like and some patients and their families will celebrate the holidays surrounded by beeping machines and sterile environments. It is exciting to see the technology we use to care for a child’s illness can be used to boost the spirit as well…
Success stories like this prompt me to think of every increasing ways we can leverage technology to bring better health services – iced with a bit of joy – to our patients in the coming year! Hope it does the same for you!
