Up, up and away! Cloud a Major Topic at IBC 2014

IBC 2014, the conference and exhibition hosted by the beautiful city of Amsterdam, in the generous confines of the RAI facility, came to a close last week. The exhibition, spread across 14 halls and spanning 5 days, attracted more than 55,000 attendees to see the latest offerings and technological advances of over 1500 exhibitors. It’s an exciting place to be… there is a tangible buzz generated from the proximity of so many industry experts and enthusiasts, from veteran business leaders to smart start-up engineers.

My overwhelming take-away from the event was of the continued pervasiveness of the cloud and the cloud services ecosystem. Media management in the cloud, transcoding in the cloud, metadata in the cloud, playout in the cloud, archive to the cloud, cloud DVR, cloud UI rendering, cloud collaborative editing and post-production… and more. The barrier to entry for service providers to launch new, cost-effective, value-add features has never been lower, leveraging the scalability, reliability and efficiency gains that cloud computing together with the SaaS model enables. The movement from hardware to software services is also a driving force behind a slower but inevitable transition, that is, the adoption of IP for the end-to-end video signal path from camera to cutting room to consumer.

I was privileged to be exhibiting on the main Cisco stand, demonstrating a product which I’ve helped develop. Videoscape TV Analytics is a cloud service which provides deep insights into the viewing population: both who they are and how they use your service.  We are able to predict Read More »

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2014: It’s a Wi-Fi Bonanza!

By David Alsobrook, Director, Strategy & Product Management, Cisco’s Connected Devices BUDavid Alsobrook

If there’s one thing that is absolutely unmistakable, going into this week’s IBC conference in Amsterdam, it’s the proliferation of Wi-Fi -- a technology that’s also a service, and the industry’s ticket to providing wireless broadband connectivity that simultaneously rivals mobile, and tightens consumer loyalty.

Note: I’m not the cheerleader type, and as such don’t use the word “bonanza” loosely. By definition it is “a situation or event that creates a sudden increase in wealth, good fortune, or profits.” That fits. Let’s go literal about the increase in wealth, good fortune, or profits. Here’s an impressive supporting number for you: As of this moment, we’ve shipped Read More »

It’s a Brave New Virtualized World With InterCloud, 4K, Analytics, Advertising, and So Much More

christelle gentalWritten By Christelle Gental

The IBC (International Broadcasting Conference) opens again in Amsterdam this autumn with Cisco demonstrating advanced solutions that push the envelope of new technologies offering Service Providers new and innovative services to their customers whilst reducing the costs in delivering these advanced services utilizing newer infrastructure architectures.

Cisco’s report on the growth of Internet traffic (the VNI Global IP Traffic and Service Adoption Forecast) declares that by 2018, the world will reach 2.5 trillion Internet video minutes per month.  That’s 5 million years of video will cross the Internet each month. The quality of video is also increasing, with 4K video technology now becoming available. Soon this will become mainstream as video Service Providers are gearing up toward providing HEVC across all delivery platforms -- cable, satellite and broadband.

It isn’t just the high resolution services that are changing; the demand from customers to view their content on more and more devices, with differing formats and a more ‘personalized’ experience, is still prevalent. New trends are also starting to emerge. The Internet of Everything (IoE) is an exciting new market for Service Providers to explore and leverage to provide innovative new services outside the traditional delivery of video. Cisco have been at the forefront of the IoE revolution, with John Chambers predicting that IoE will have a significantly greater effect on people’s lives than even the internet has done!

As services provided to customers change, so do infrastructures.  An example is the move from large private data centres to Read More »

What Did the Olympics, World Cup and CommonWealth Games Have in Common?

We interrupt the 2014 IBC convention with this 10-point bonus question: What do the Olympics, World Cup, and the Commonwealth Games have in common?

Hints: It’s a two-part answer. Both big topics at IBC, and everywhere else; one of them is a word simultaneously associated with both weather and software; it rhymes with “plowed.” The other gives new meaning to “better than your eyes can see.”

One is the cloud, of course, and the other is 4K/UltraHD video. Both showed up strongly at this year’s big sports tickets around the world.

Starting with the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, where we dispatched to NBC most of our Videoscape suite of next-generation IP video components — from signal acquisition to media distribution and client software, serving both set-top boxes and HTML-5-based devices. Essentially, we sent over everything from contribution video products to the end screens, with a lot in between.

One thing was different this year — Read More »

Endpoint Management: The system that allows you to speak everyone’s language

Imagine standing in front of a crowd constituting a random cross-sample of the world population. You want to convey a single message that everyone can understand – but will your audience understand your language? Some might, but certainly not all. Some would pick up your message right away, others would have no idea what you wanted. And would you understand them? What if they had urgent information to transmit? What if they needed help but didn’t know how to convey their needs to you? Read More »
