As you know there are many changes in manufacturing operations today. These certainly relate to Operations Excellence, Continuous Innovation, Energy Management, even the Supply Chain and Customer Service world. There are technology changes and personnel changes. There are Global impacts as manufacturing companies compete in new regions and those same new regions sprout new manufacturers. And at the end of the day (or maybe the beginning?) there is a need for someone to build a specialized machine.
We have already seen the power of a converged (technologically) network. Ethernet/IP helps the controls world provide information to the IT world. We see this every day, where older proprietary networks are replaced by standard Ethernet. Here are some thoughts as they relate to specialized machine builders:
So, we have this technology that can unify us, Ethernet. Who knew that years ago I sold against Ethernet? But that was a different version. Today is new, with managed switches, managed services, and tomorrow is your new today.

I recently got back from a successful east coast jaunt and wanted to share some thoughts on my first Educause experience while they’re still fresh.
After marketing video across many verticals, I have to say I was nothing short of impressed with the level of attendee engagement we received from the Educause 2011 crowd around video.
Video and higher ed are a natural pair in many ways — video is the cornerstone technology for lecture capture and also helps make distance learning aspirations a reality. Along these lines, our new Lecture Vision solution announcement and demo were very well received and it was great to hear how universities have already started down the path to pervasive video.

As anyone with kids can relate, this time of year is one of the most fun, but challenging times of the year. It’s tough to be away from your family or traveling with so many holidays coming up and the kids buzzing with projects, decorations, costumes and school events.
I was recently in an all day planning meeting and got a text from my wife that our four year old daughter was dying to show me her new Halloween costume. Sure, this is something I could easily see when I got home, but have you ever tried telling a four year old to wait a couple days … or even a few hours? During a break I called home on Cisco Movi from my Mac. Seconds later, there was my daughter. Grinning ear to ear in her adorable flower costume.

Technology adoption comes in many flavors, speeds, and styles. And when it comes to new tools that make things we’ve always done better, many of us are often skeptical. But eventually, most of us get over that and the new technology takes hold. Otherwise, we’d still be chopping trees with axes instead of chainsaws, heating our coffee over an open flame, and wouldn’t even know what a Venti Half-Caf Skinny Soy Pumpkin Spice Latte was. (I’m not certain I do to this day…)
