We came together at ASIS, September 2012 in Philadelphia and made good progress with Plugfest – The Media Services Proxy (MSP) CDN program for validating the interoperability of your IP Surveillance cameras with the Cisco Network. We shared with you the capabilities of MSP, the value it can bring for you, and had a live lab where we tested (plug-and-play) your cameras with the MSP software at the event.
Since then we have been working with many of you on getting you on boarded with the CDN program so you could be our official partners, and have also been working on analyzing the lab data we gathered at ASIS.

Higher Education and school districts often have sufficient network infrastructures to support everything they need in terms of unified collaborative safety and security applications on the network including video surveillance, electronic access controls and incident management.
Using video is about the optimal experience for the task at hand – it is about creating that in-person experience from immersive TelePresence, but also about creating the best possible experience when you are on the road participating via your iPad.
When it comes to video, Cisco does three things differently to ensure superior end-to-end video experiences with greater efficiencies:
Architectural Approach: The Cisco Medianet architecture delivers superior experiences and efficiencies by integrating video capabilities all the way from the network to the application. Cisco video endpoints use Medianet to discover and configure themselves, dramatically reducing deployment cost. Medianet infrastructure provides detailed performance information, which allows IT organizations to detect and fix problems in a fraction of the time required by traditional approaches. Medianet also helps companies leverage existing investments to build new capabilities more cost efficiently, such as adding recording and sharing to TelePresence or providing common call control for voice and video endpoints. Cisco’s advantage comes from the network, which allows us to build and manage systems that best “understand” network performance, complexity, interactivity, and capacity. While Medianet provides compelling experience and total cost of ownership advantages today, we believe an architectural approach like Medianet will become absolutely required as video becomes pervasive.
Nearly every campus across the country faces an ongoing challenge with helping provide a safe and secure learning environment both for students and educators alike. Elon University in North Carolina has already taken steps to address this, by recognising that deploying a fully IP-based surveillance infrastructure can create a new partnership model between IT and security. This new collaborative approach uses the converged network as a platform for deploying and managing video cameras across the campus.
In this video, Elon’s assistant vice president and CIO Chris Fulkerson shares some key insights into how productivity of security staff and the campus police force has increased since deploying a Cisco IP video surveillance solution.
“Every parent’s main concern is security for their college student. This Cisco Video Surveillance System has enabled us to multiply our security and police force by giving us eyes in multiple locations all at the same time. At Elon, the surveillance system has proven to be a real deterrent to crime. Our old system was very labor intensive to install and operate. With this new system it takes just 10 seconds to deploy a camera. We are excited that it gives the power and flexibility directly to police to operate the system instead of requiring so much IT intervention.
