The Global Certification Team (GCT) is pleased to announce the Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Services Module (ASA SM) blade for 6500 series & 7600 series on software version 9.0.(0)16 or later has received USGv6 Certification from University of New Hampshire – Interoperability Laboratory. The UNH-IOL uses this collaborative testing model to distribute the cost of performing trusted, third-party testing and validation. USGv6 testing covers 27 categories of USGv6 NPD tests. The US Federal Government, like many large IT organizations and other national governments recognizes the important of transition their networks to support IPv6. On Sept 2010 a memo on the transition to IPv6, was issued by then Federal CIO; Vivek Kundra, outlining the government’s commitment and rational behind expediting the operational deployment and use of IPv6.

Cisco Leading the Way in IPv6 Certifications
IPv6 has reached an important milestone. Governments around the world are implementing mandates for the acquisition and deployment of IPv6 capable products. Industry wide, both enterprise and service providers are also gearing up to provide IPv6 capabilities in their networks. The momentum has been captured in the form of World IPv6 Launch day on June 6th.
Cisco is an industry thought leader in IPv6 and has addressed IPv6 implementation in its products to meet the requirements of government, industry and consumers. The majority of Cisco’s core products have been supporting IPv6 for well over a decade. The acceleration of IPv6 adoption has increased in the last few years, with a corporate wide focus on implementing IPv6 across Cisco’s product lines. Cisco understands and appreciates the leadership government has taken in the adoption of IPv6 and has invested heavily in partnering with various government agencies to enable this vision.
Specifically in the government certifications arena, Cisco has been long involved in the National Institute of Standards and Technologies, or NIST’s, USGv6 program. When the US Government mandated the purchase of IPv6-certified products, Cisco was the first company to embrace this direction. We are working directly with NIST and the Department of Defense, as well as standards bodies to meet the government requirements. Cisco is at the forefront of enabling our government customers to implement IPv6 as is evidenced by the number of products we’ve taken through the USGv6 certification testing. When we last tuned in we discussed how the IPv6 certification process is designed to ensure devices properly implement the IPv6 protocol and interoperate with all other certified components. It was also mentioned that, with the level of revenue generated by today’s public network, the owners of these networks are hesitant to fully implement the protocol with fears of instability. The world’s governments are leading the efforts in proving this network stability by designing their next generation networks around the IPv6 protocol.

As 2011 comes to a close, it’s a good time to look back at a very successful year for Cisco’s Global Certifications. Cisco is committed to government product certifications and has increased the investment to ensure customers can trust the integrity, security and interoperability of Cisco IT network systems. New certifications include:
- 12 FIPS 140-2 validations,
- 5 Common Criteria certifications,
- 25 new product listings on the US Department of Defense Unified Communications Approved Products List (UC APL),
- 13 new USGv6 certifications, and
- 12 new IPv6 Ready Logo Phase 2 certifications
These 67 new certifications, the most ever in one year at Cisco, continue to demonstrate Cisco’s commitment to our Public Sector customers. At the same time, these certifications improve product quality and security for all customers.
In addition to product certifications, Cisco continues to stress the importance of a single, standards-based, mutually recognized certification program, specifically Common Criteria, for evaluating product assurance. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) vendors cannot scale to demands from countries with unique product certification requirements. Not only does this impact the ability of vendors to improve product security but it reduces the portfolio of products customers have to choose from, thereby potentially reducing the security of their networks against emerging cyber security threats.
2012 will be an exciting year at Cisco for government product certifications. We will continue to look for ways to scale, both internally and externally, to the ever increasing demand for product certifications across a broader set of our product offerings.
