Upgrading a critical enterprise call processing system to a completely new virtualized server platform sounds pretty tricky. Doing it from 5,000 miles away, in the public square of a sleepy Spanish village using your laptop and a VPN connection over the free municipal WiFi service sounds … well, maybe a little crazy. Recently, I did just that, migrating our Cisco Unified Communications Manager (UCM) cluster in Johannesburg, South Africa to the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) platform from the small village in Spain where I was vacationing.
There’s been some activity inside Cisco around big data, particularly with regards to Hadoop running on Cisco’s Nexus switches and UCS servers. A little bit of that work is starting to surface here and there, so I thought it would be a good time to do a little post to aggregate.
- Last month, we published a solution brief with Oracle about the benefits of running Oracle NoSQL on UCS [pdf].
- This month, we published a solution brief announcing Cloudera’s certification of UCS and Nexus cluster designs for their Hadoop distribution: Cloudera Hadoop Infrastructure with Cisco UCS Servers and Cisco Nexus Switches Powered by Intel Xeon Processors [pdf].
- Sean McKeown (@sean_m_mckeown) started blogging with a series on “Why Hadoop?”. Here are part 1 and part 2. Sean covers the basics of the case for big data and Hadoop.
- Tomorrow, Jacob Rapp will be speaking at Hadoop World on “Hadoop Network and Compute Architecture Considerations“
- We just published a white paper with some very interesting data from network testing we’ve done in house called: “Big Data in the Enterprise: Network Design Considerations“. This one gets very technical very quickly, but it’s highly recommended reading for networking folks deploying big data clusters, particularly with Hadoop.

In this recent article by Alex Barret you’ll find some great commentary by customers on the “snowballing” interest around the Cisco Unified Computing System. It follows on the heels of TechTarget’s Virtualization Decisions 2011 Purchasing Intentions Survey where nearly 20% of respondents pointed to UCS as their platform of choice for virtualization.
When you start to see IT professionals recommending a platform to their friends and neighbors you know it’s for real. It’s exciting to see people talking about the tangible benefits that they’re realizing … and they tell the story better than anyone here at Cisco.
Changing voicemail systems–or the servers they run on–can be a big, time-consuming, and difficult task. Yet recently we did both. We migrated our application platform from Cisco Unity 7.0 (2) running on Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers, to Cisco Unity Connection 8.5 running as a virtual machine onthe Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) platform. What’s more, we completed the cutover of more than 87,000 voicemail boxes to the new platform in a single weekend.

Intel blogger Sandhya Gorman is back this week to talk about Intel and Cisco leadership in innovation and collaboration .
“Two leaders I respect very much were featured at Oracle Open World 2011- Cisco CEO John Chambers and Intel GM Kirk Skaugen. Both spoke on different days to separate audiences but the themes were strikingly synergistic.
Skaugen spoke about the explosion of data that will be sparked by the 15B connected devices expected to be in the hands of the worldwide population by 2015. This year, connected devices produced 245 Exabytes (that’s a 10 followed by 18 zero’s) of data alone. As we get to 15B devices, businesses will need to rely on the Cloud to manage all the data in order for them to focus their efforts on innovation and capturing market transitions.
Chambers expressed Cisco’s vision of collaboration and connectivity to foster innovation. Businesses and consumers no longer will have to deal with 7 or 8 vendors, standalone devices and architectures to collaborate and realize the relevance of the all the exabytes of data we process. Interestingly, both Cisco and Intel are in a position of enabling collaboration and innovation from both a push and pull perspective.
