Cisco Live in San Diego with a record breaking 17000 attendees was a blast, as you can tell from the video montage below. I unwittingly ended up in the video for a brief second.
The tag line “What you make possible” was prominently displayed at the conference. For me it was a great opportunity to talk to Cisco UCS users and partners who make a whole lot possible in their respective organizations. The keynote by Cisco CEO, John Chambers featured moving a computation workload from a Cisco UCS server in the data center to an E-Series server in a branch office and it created a buzz.

Thursday evening at Microsoft Tech Ed North America 2012 in Orlando, FL. Cisco’s UCS Manager was awarded the Breakthrough Technology Award in the annual Best of Tech Ed Awards ceremony. This year companies submitted 260 submissions for Best of Tech Ed consideration. These were narrowed down to 46 finalists in 15 categories. The Breakthrough Technology Product award can be thought of as the ‘Best of the Best’ and showcases leading product innovation. Microsoft Tech Ed North America is Microsoft’s largest IT Professional conference with over 10,000+ attendees.
Here are the Judges comment on UCS Manager: “This year’s winner of our Breakthrough Technology award is Cisco’s USC Servers and UCS Server Manager. Cisco UCS Manager provides complete programmability for all low-level hardware, BIOS, and configuration settings for Cisco UCS Servers, enabling them to be quickly deployed, cloned, and managed—even remotely. This is the second year in a row for Cisco technology to be recognized in the Best of Tech Ed Awards as last year our B series offering won the hardware category.
I had several interesting conversations with customers regarding Cisco UCS Manager, the embedded device manager, which simplifies server management in the data center. Customers spanned the entire gamut from those who had purchased the UCS three years ago when it was just introduced to those evaluating the product today. I also attended the keynote address by VMWare CEO Paul Maritz, and found his talk fascinating. He alluded to two megatrends affecting Information Technology namely “Cloud” and “Big data”.
The terms “life cycle” conjure up an image of a biology class on butterflies for me. The metamorphosis that a butterfly undergoes is very interesting. Every stage has a specific purpose:
In the data center, life cycle of servers is something we deal with all the time. For analysis we could consider physical, virtual or software servers just like I did in a previous blog. I drew the life cycle of the 3 servers and the resulting diagram is below. Interestingly a physical server is the only one that can be truly re-purposed, more like the stages in the life cycle of a butterfly.
