I had the pleasure of visiting this vibrant island country while we were filming this video. The Republic of Malta sits in the Mediterranean south of Sicily and north of Libya, a strategic crossroads with a visible history that dates back to thousands of years BC. Some of the oldest standing temples in Malta pre-date the Egyptian Pyramids by a millennium.

What a joy, then, to experience the thoroughly modern nation that Malta has become, thanks in part to the vision of the telecommunications provider Melita. The name Melita itself reflects the long history of the country – thought to derive from an ancient Greek word for “honey-sweet”, reflecting a unique species of bees that are found in Malta. How Much Traffic Will Your Cable / Telco Network Generate?

Cisco VNI Forecast Projects 1.6 Zettabytes of Global IP Traffic by 2018

Last June, Cisco released an update to its annual Visual Networking Index (VNI), 2013 – 2018. The forecast projects a global annual run rate of 1.6 zettabytes IP traffic by 2018 (up from 614 exabytes of global IP traffic in 2013).  A zettabyte certainly sounds like a big number (equivalent to 1 billion terabytes, external storage drives generally come in a terabyte denomination). But how can this forecast methodology be applied to an individual cable or a telecommunications provider’s footprint?  Our updated Cable/Telco Service Provider Abstract Network (CT-SPAN) tool can help answer this question.  CT-SPAN is developed using the latest VNI assumptions for fixed networks and enable you to quickly develop customized service provider scenarios to estimate the annual traffic forecasts and revenue. In the past, voice traffic was transported over a dedicated voice infrastructure, and the data network infrastructure was established in parallel so that voice and data traffic did not interfere with each other. I sat on a plane the other day with Walter Axe, 99 years old and a happily-retired former telephone company engineer, on the way to see his newest great-granddaughter. During the three-hour flight, Walter regaled me with stories of his life in the Bell System.

He joined the company in 1931, fresh out of the Army. He dug ditches, put up poles (often using teams of horses), ran wire, worked in the switch room, and ultimately ended up in Illinois, where he found himself in, as he describes it, “the best job in the world.” Intrigued, I asked what the job was.

Wikipedia defines it as “A perverse effect contrary to what was originally intended.” It turns out that the law of unintended consequences is alive and well, and has been for years in the world of telecommunications.

Consider the story of the woman who called the telephone company back in the 1940s to report a problem. The problem, it seemed, was that every time the phone rang, her dog shrieked and barked and did the canine equivalent of St. Vitus’ dance.
