2015 will be remembered as the year of the Internet of things. The tipping point when IoT went from the back rooms of the technology world to become mainstream.
The consultancy McKinsey estimates that the Internet of Things – a world where up to 50 billion things (or devices) will be connected to the Internet – could create up to $11 trillion per year of new economic value to business and society. The term Internet of Things traces its origins to 1999, but it is only over the last year or so that the realization of its transformational potential has reached the business community and the general population. The number of research reports, conferences and media articles devoted to the topic has exploded. With the media making the connection between the smart home and the connected automobile IoT has begun to become part of the popular parlance.

In the western Scandinavian fjords of Norway, Enivest an internet service provider has deployed a new optical transport network using a Cisco optical network solution (NCS 2000). While this, in itself, may not be big news to most people, the real story is about how Enivest managed this deployment. For people who are not familiar with the expertise and time needed for installing and then lighting up an optical network, it typically takes two days per node/site with some give or take depending on the level of the technician’s expertise.
So, if we consider the eight (8) sites and nodes that Enivest lit up along a 260km span of Sognefjord in Norway (see map below) we would estimate the deployment to have taken upwards of 16 days. What is impressive abut this deployment is that it took less than a week for Enivest to install and turn on over 260 km of fiber running through 8 sites/nodes for its customers. This kind of agility is important for service providers who are continually looking to cut operating costs and realize new revenue streams.

The explosive growth of mobility has had a transformative impact in recent years. Increasingly, it is viewed not just as an industry force but as an overall economic lever, driving expansion on a GDP level.
This was a core theme of the 2012 Canadian Telecom Summit, which I attended last week in Toronto. Certainly, Canada itself is a prime example, and there was much discussion about the vital role mobile video and data have played as key enablers in Canada’s economy as a whole.
My presentation and panel at the Summit focused on the opportunities afforded to service providers by this unbridled appetite for mobility, especially from a business-to-business perspective. In particular, I discussed the intersection between cloud and the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) movement. This evolution, I believe, will be a critical catalyst, ensuring the continuation of mobility-driven productivity and economic growth.

As service providers move to cloud-based services, their IP addressing management system must operate efficiently in the virtualized environment of the cloud. And within the cloud environment, these systems for DHCP, DNS and IP address management must also be fast. For example, many organizations have expressed a concern that poor DHCP performance could be the weak link when thousands of customers come back online after a failure event. If DHCP address requests are handled in a slow or scattered manner, servers will not be able to service all requests in a timely fashion.
