TechWiseTV SP 168 covers Cloud VPN
I first saw this demo’d at Cisco Live Milan and although it was interesting, I don’t think I fully appreciated the problem being solved.
The base technology enabling this became our first show in the SP series (NSO enabled by Tail-f). It was then that I began to really appreciate how some of the most mature technologies, like VPN, did not have the agility providers need to truly offer all their potential customers.
We ARE going to show you a specific service, using YOUR network, where the technology can be ready to go faster than your marketing or sales department can be ready to sell it.

The numbers are pretty clear: By 2019, there will over $800 billion worth of incremental revenue and value for service providers to seize across cloud, mobile, and video technologies. (MOI Tool)
But when it came to rolling out new services…SP’s have only been able to service the largest of clients. The complexity of configuration on a new service is so manual and complex that only the biggest opportunities made sense.

Carl Moberg from Tail-f covers NSO on TechWiseTV
This is the first in a new series of Service Provider focused topics. We had a lot of choices on where to start but this jumped out as my favorite. Tail-f brought us some incredibly successful work that dovetails nicely into our SP strategy.
Tedious CLI and home-spun scripts continue to characterize a boom of network growth that is now struggling under its own weight. SP networks, and many enterprises in fact, just can’t keep up with the demand for services. This now affects their ability to compete and thrive.
It has been impossible to implement network management and/or automation from the outside in. Even if our networks were all from one single vendor, the number of updates, traffic characteristics and unique configurations would still make it an uphill battle. SP networks are multivendor and full of legacy equipment that continues to have value. Cisco’s NSO is now offering a way to work this problem from the inside out. Standards and protocols that have been grown and tested over the last decade are now ready to turn this into one of those great ‘why didn’t we do this before’ situations.
– Watch the full 20 minute show now –
- Wayne Cullen walks us through Cisco’s Evolved Services Platform (ESP), the vision and the updated roadmap.
- Carl Moberg explains NETCONF, YANG and the benefits of a model driven architecture.

I had been looking forward to revisiting one of my favorite data center’s. We had done this first back in 2011 and that video continues to do pretty well.
We had a chance to go back this year and one of the first things I noticed when we returned…it was filling up. All the open floor space we shot the open for in 2011 was now filled and their were crews still pulling in fresh cable, racking new equipment and more. It was a busy place all night long. TechWiseTV Allen Data Center Cable Pull
One of the biggest reasons we returned was the growth in cloud services and the extensive use and build out of UCS of course, but now also ACI. The flexibility of this entire network relies upon the very use of technology that Cisco is developing. Its certainly on the mature side of course since this is one of Cisco’s primary production centers. As you would probably notice, its a beautiful, roomy layout that makes it desirable for touring. This is not common of course but it was built as a showcase for customers who want to see how things look when they all come together. The site is mirrored in Richardson, just a 20 minute drive South from this Allen location so that either site could take over and maintain operations for Cisco.
I am a big fan of all the physical facility innovation present here. These visual aspects would be appealing to a visual storyteller of course, but they also have not really changed since 2011. Read More »

As you’ve no doubt seen from our recent Connected Mobile Experiences (CMX) Momentum announcement, the solution continues to evolve in exciting new ways. As new customers see the potential and expand the number and types of use cases, we want to continue to grow the solution and deliver the most compelling location-based services available.
The one constant through all this continual change is how seeing is believing.
I know the line is overused and typically associated with something someone is trying to make seem just this side of magic. That’s not my intent. CMX isn’t magic. It’s just an intelligent and innovate application of the technology that most businesses do or should have in place. That said, the best way to understand and believe in the potential of CMX is to see it in use.
If you ever get a chance to visit a CMX deployment, including a Cisco Customer Experience Center, CMX Demo Lab, and, coming soon, a CMX On-the-Go Demo, by all means take the time. You will not be disappointed. Read More »
