Girls at 80 Cisco Offices Learn About Careers in Technology

April 25 was International Girls in ICT Day, a global event held on the fourth Thursday in April each year to help inspire girls to consider a future in technology. The number of girls and young women opting to study technology-related disciplines is on the decline in most countries worldwide.

In only its third year, Girls in ICT Day continues to gain global momentum. This year, events hosted by governments, private sector companies, and nonprofits took place in more than 100 countries.

Cisco is committed to championing the important role a career in technology can play in creating far-reaching opportunities for women and girls. Eighty Cisco offices held Girls in ICT Day events in 60 counties.

On Girls in ICT Day, Cisco Encourages Teens to Pursue Technology Careers

Teenage girls use computers and the Internet as much as boys do, but are five times less likely to consider a technology-related career.

In the United Kingdom, fewer than 1 in 5 computer scientists are women (Women and ICT), and in the United States, women hold more degrees than men and make up 58 percent of the professional workforce, yet their representation in ICT is less than 25 percent (NCWIT).

Companies around the world will try to reverse these trends on International Girls in ICT Day this Thursday, April 25 – an initiative organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Cisco enables Wi-Fi at Hotel Technology Forum at renowned Bellagio

We are heading to The Strip once again next week as sponsors of the Hotel Technology Forum (HTF). This time, we are staying in some very comfortable territory and get to experience our own solutions in action. The Bellagio will be hosting HTF from April 17-19 and expects to have many hospitality leaders pass through its lobby.

In late 2012, the Bellagio along with three other MGM Resorts’ properties completed a Cisco Systems Network Wi-Fi installation.  An instant upgrade, hotel guests and conference attendees no longer have to pay a fee or enter a password to access the wireless local area network (LAN) via their smart phones, laptops and tablets.  HTF show-goers will experience a network that is 30 percent faster than similar large-scale wireless networks as well as all 330 access points The Bellagio has to offer.

Virtual Work Works, But Don’t Confuse Technology with Change Management

I was in a brainstorm meeting about my team’s next-generation strategy last week, and we made a number of random connections that knitted together a pretty big idea — the kind of dot-connecting that only happens when people with different (and sometime conflicting) perspectives trust each other in the pursuit of an important goal.

Five of us worked on the idea, but only two of us were in the room physically together. Yes, I’ll say it out loud:  three people were working from home.

Much has been said and written recently about the value of working virtually, and I don’t think you can sub-divide mobility into “at home” and “on the road.” Social technologies, video and mobile platforms make it easy to work from just about anywhere.

But as leaders, we have to resist the temptation to confuse technology with change management – despite our love affair with technology. Any time technology brings a sea-change transformation to the way humans do stuff, especially work stuff, we can’t forget that people work in organizations — and organizations are an amalgam of culture, processes and technology.

All of Cisco’s experience has taught us that Read More »
