Telemetry & Gaining Web Scale Operational Efficiency – Is it a Myth or Reality?

We can’t express how excited we were when Cisco was asked to sponsor and participate in an independent event, hosted by Tech Field Day, which invited experts from NetFlix, Google, eBay, and SignalFX to discuss the technical challenges some of these web scale providers face and the innovations they have helped drive in the industry to answer those challenges.  Although, the major focus of the event was on telemetry, they discussed various aspects of scale, management and operational efficiency in their environments. If learning from the industry leaders interests you – continue reading!

Tech Field Day invited six speakers to the event. The speakers presented to a delegate panel of independent industry veterans and bloggers who are respected names in the industry. During the session Read More »

Wireless Field Day 8 Recap – Cisco Mobility Express Introduction with Brian Levin

In the beginning of the month we had the honor of participating in Wireless Field Day 8. For the unsure, the Tech Field Day crew brings in independent bloggers, speakers, and podcasters to vendors in the bay area for deep-dives. The 12 delegates of #WFD8 came by Cisco to discuss our approach to operational simplicity.  Greg Dorai, VP of Product Management, kicked off the Field Day with an overview of our sessions: 802.11ac Wave 2, CMX 10.2, and Systems Manager.

Next Brian Levin, Product Manager of Platform WLAN, introduced Cisco Mobility Express and discussed what 802.11ac Wave 2 means to Cisco. He gives an overview of the new capabilities found in the Cisco Aironet 1830 and 1850 access points, such as Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO). He then further went on to show on a whiteboard the provisioning process of Mobility Express.

Here are some questions that were asked during Brian’s first session on Mobility Express (time stamps included): Read More »

Cisco to Kick-off Networking Field Day 10 on August 19th at 9:30am

We are excited to share that Cisco will be participating in networkingfielddayNetworking Field Day 10 this year. Cisco brings together independent thought leaders and our engineers to share information and opinions in a two-hour interactive discussion format. If you cannot attend NFD10 all presentations will be live streamed from the Tech Field Day website.

These are the topics Cisco is covering this year at #NFD10:

Intelligent WAN (IWAN) Architecture: We are busting the myth that IWAN is part of a marchitecture and explaining DMVPNv3, Pfrv3, and AVC. We will also be expanding on how the IWAN architecture improves scale and performance while delivering better business outcomes for customers. Learn more about Cisco Intelligent WAN.

Branch Security: We will be showing how our security solutions simplify WAN provisioning. We will also explain how Cisco protects and hardens the network from outside attacks and security vulnerabilities. Topics covered during this presentation are Crypto, Certification CC, FIPS, NSA Suite B, and Security Designs. Learn more about Cisco Security.

Software Defined WAN (SD-WAN): Our presenter will be demonstrating how our APIC-EM Controller with IWAN App provides centralized configuration and orchestration for the WAN while doing a live demo. Learn more about SD-WAN.

Love Wi-Fi? Tune in for #WFD7 this Friday

Tomorrow’s a special #WirelessWednesday, hats off to the folks working hard at Tech Field Day for kicking off the SEVENTH installment of Wireless Field Day. It’s an exciting time  for the industry to give the delegates and the world wide web of Wi-Fi enthusiasts a glimpse behind the scenes of some of the latest technologies, and we are ready to put on a show.

This year, Cisco will host Wireless Field Day 7 delegates at the Cisco Meraki San Francisco office this Friday.

We will be spending 2 hours discussing the forefront of Wireless technology with Cisco thought leaders. Here is a sneak peek of what will be covered.

  • Latest updates on the Cisco Meraki MR product line.
  • Deep dive into the Cisco Meraki traffic analytics algorithm; how it works and how it scales for large deployments.
  • Deep dives into MU-MIMO and RX-SOP; what they are and how they work
  • Discussion on 802.11ac and where it’s going.

The show will start at 9:30am PST. We’ll be on Twitter with #WFD7 and streamed live on the TechFieldDay website. Tune in Friday to hear updates on the future of wireless networking.

Virtual Symposium #2: Cisco ONE

We decided to take advantage of the fine collection of smart people running around at CiscoLive in San Diego, and tape another in our Virtual Symposia series.  This one was a bit different than in that we started with a Cisco-specific seed topic and we did not take live Q&A due to the logistics of being live and onsite at CiscoLive.

I think the show turned out well–we have a wide ranging discussion on not just the Cisco ONE announcement but also SDN, network programmability and implications for networking folks.

This wide-ranging discussion touched on a number of topics:

  • Contrasting Cisco’s ONE strategy with SDN and OpenFlow in general
  • APIs, OpenFlow, and XML
  • What will people do with SDN in the future?
  • Distributed and autonomous versus centralized
  • Standards: IEEE vs. IETF, de facto and interoperability
  • VXLAN and the Nexus 1000V – Is 1000V SDN?
  • Operational and organizational impacts
  • Systems engineering
  • Thinking of networks as flows

The video is hosted on the Tech Field Day site.

As I noted last week, we will be hosting Virtual Symposia #3 (more on network programmability) and #4 (VM networking) later this month.  I should have the registration links up tomorrow.  We have a killer panel coming together and we will once again have most of the show dedicated to audience Q&A, so I hope you can join us for those.
