How Touch and Gesture Technologies Enhance Interactivity

As a young boy, growing up in London during the 1960s, I always enjoyed a visit to the Science Museum with my father. While a few of the exhibits included a very basic interactive component, most of the exhibits were designed for viewing at a distance.

In fact, some were clearly labeled “please don’t touch,” perhaps with the intent to help preserve an old scientific artifact. In contrast, today they offer over 50 interactive exhibits as part of their Launchpad hands-on gallery.

Clearly, display interactivity is being advanced by new technology.

Using Netbooks and Tablets to Encourage Learning: A Case Study

Today’s students are wired -- which is now an old school way of saying connected!

In fact today they are wireless! They have grown up with technology. They have integrated it into their lives. They socialize through technology. Technology, supported by robust and secure networks, gives them instant access to information at home and on the go.

But, what about their classroom experience?

Some forward thinking educators have realized that technology is a key ingredient in driving student engagement and learning outcomes. These educators are embracing new learning programs that feature netbooks or a tablet. In the hands of students, these Internet-based devices can help to increase collaboration and engagement, creating a technology-rich learning environment that feel familiar to students.

Play the Cisco Global Events Mobile App Game for a Chance to Win #ragancisco

May 3, 2012 at 7:00 am PST

According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) study, “by the end of 2012, the number of mobile-connected devices will exceed the number of people on earth, and by 2016 there will be 1.4 mobile devices per capita”. Actually, I’m already a member of the “1.4 mobile devices per capita” group. I’d even say I am married to my 1.4 mobile devices.

If you’re like me and can’t imagine stepping out of your home without your phone or tablet, don’t miss out on Read More »

Do Tablets Signal Extinction for Desk Phones?

April 12, 2012 at 10:47 am PST

I read an interesting post on No Jitter yesterday that poses the question, “The End of the Desk Phone?” The author suggests that the era of the desk phone is coming to a close. The gist is that tablets are essentially going to take over the known universe and send desk phones the way of the Studebaker.

Like a lot of people, the author is particularly fond of Apple iPads and positions them as the ideal phone eliminator. Once upon a time a lot of people said the same thing about microwave ovens vs. regular stoves. Didn’t happen. Sure, I can make popcorn with a lot less fuss and muss, but convenient though it may be, it’s not the tool for baking a chicken – or better yet, chocolate chip cookies. Read More »

BYOD for Manufacturers: Tablets Welcome! Here’s how…

April 10, 2012 at 8:59 am PST

Have you noticed all those iPads around the factory? All around the production areas, the office areas and the warehouse? These  mobile connected devices and applications are quickly changing business and organizational models.

They are also changing employee habits and the way we work, as more and more users depend on tablets, such as the Apple iPad, for a variety of daily personal and professional tasks.

It’s not  just Apple, though they’re the most common. All those other tablets too.  Some of the others are  capable of a drop or two, or more onto hard concrete!

The most prevalent use case that IT departments need to solve for is the one where an employee brings their own personal device into the company and seeks to gain network access. This is happening a lot these days.  Funny, but companies are finding this is one of the ways they are attracting and keeping talent, especially young talent, so listen up!
