For quite some time now, I’ve been thinking about writing a book. A book about social media. A book about what I’ve seen and learned. A book about things I would like to see. A book about strategy -- I love strategy. I’ve started writing it several times. But every time I sit down at my keyboard, doubts take over. “Why do I want to write a book? Why shouldn’t I just blog about it?” Oh, that four-letter word always wins out and the bolded text (“Chapter 1”) on my screen quickly becomes a blog title. So while I continue to contemplate whether or not to embark on this journey, I would like to leave you with a few pages from my unwritten book….in slide deck format. I had the pleasure of presenting yesterday on social media planning. The first presentation covered basic enablement, listening and intelligence, engagement and measurement. The second presentation highlighted advanced listening and intelligence, engagement, advocacy and measurement practices. Today, I’m sharing the first chapter. Hope you find it useful.
Cisco Partner Summit 2013 was an amazing event this year, and as you saw throughout the week, we had lots to tell you about the huge opportunity for partners focused on the midmarket. In my last post, I discussed the importance of a strong network foundation. Let’s get a little deeper into this now. The strategies depicted in the diagram below have been developed over nearly two decades of Cisco Services experience in the field. These outline what MUST be addressed in order to successfully and fully optimize your investment. Omission of any one will induce risk into the project. I will highlight this as we pass through the strategies.

Much of the recent business and economic news has been uncertain, regarding the outlook for renewed growth. But I’ve been thinking positively about the upside opportunities for progress.
Let me indulge in a bit of crystal-ball gazing. The telecommunications industry spends a lot of time focusing on deploying broadband for current applications. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to see that there are at least a handful of macroeconomic trends that are either going to boost broadband adoption — or wither because there isn’t enough broadband available.
Last week I spoke at an event and the definition of social media came up. Some people refer to social networking tools when they speak of social media while others refer to the notion of engagement and content on the web. I’m more of a “gelato in a cone” kinda gal. I view social media as engagement and content (gelato) that lives in some kind of an “online container”, such as a social networking site or another web platform (cone). I’m looking for both. I would even argue that customer experiences, whether social or not, could and should be connected to optimize their journey. For example, social content can live on your web site and your social networking sites and conversations can be prominently featured at your events.
Building on the “gelato in a cone” interpretation of social media, we (@CiscoSocial) will be hosting a social media event for the savvy marketer in San Jose on April 18 and 19.
