Autonomic Networking: Where Do We Go From Here?

It’s great to be back at another Cisco Live event, this time in the great city of San Francisco.  This is the last day of the event, and if you have some time, please do stop over at the World of Solutions, where you can see Autonomic Networking in action.  We have set up a live demo of the Autonomic Networking Infrastructure (ANI) at the Service Provider area!  The following figure shows a summary of the functionality, and i’d like to refer you to a previous blog for a more thorough explanation.

Summarising, the ANI allows networks to grow and self-organize organically, merely by  devices at the edge of the Autonomic Domain joining the Autonomic Control Plane.  A new device is cabled up and powered up and will be discovered by a  device at the edge of the Autonomic Domain/Network through the Channel Discovery Process.  The new device offers its identity to the Network, and the Network, after successful authentication, will deliver a Domain Certificate to the New Device as a result, and this is achieved using the Adjacency Discovery Process.  The New Device can then leverage this Domain Certificate to join the Autonomic Control Plane (ACP), which is essentially an IPv6 based, routed IP infrastructure that is secure/encrypted, self-organising and self-healing, and which cannot be de-configured and is not prone to mis-configurations. Achieving New Wi-Fi Heights

When it comes to the mobile internet at Cisco, there has been a great deal of coverage lately around the need for and advances in small cells to offer spectrum in places hard to get to from a cell tower, on ways to optimize the macrocell radios with SON capabilities, and even some ground breaking advances we’re doing with some of the world’s leading SPs on Hotspot 2.0 to enable a seamless mobile experience. In fact, this topic of Wi-Fi  deserves attention.  Not just because, according to Cisco Mobile VNI, by 2017 more traffic will be offloaded from the mobile network than will be on it, but also because it will be the primary way for many to get access to the network in the first place.  That was certainly the case a couple of weeks ago for many of the tens of thousands attending Mobile World Congress.

As the world’s mobility industry descended upon Barcelona for a week, a number of people (myself certainly included) wanted to avoid roaming data charges which could quickly add up – so we turned to Wi-Fi.  And this year, Cisco was proud to be able to help the staff of the Fira, the convention center which hosts MWC, deliver it free to all attendees, while offering Wi-Fi services to exhibitors.  The Fira selected Cisco Wi-Fi equipment last year,  and given the anticipated demand, we brought some of our experts to the event to help manage what ended up being one of, if not, the world’s largest single Wi-Fi deployment ever staged in a venue, even surpassing our stadium deployments during championship games.  Here are just a few of the stats that attendees and exhibitors generated: Read More »

Small Cell Industry Firsts with Multimode and Small Cell SON

In June, I described how Cisco was closing the small cell loop with the rapid integration of both the Ubiquisys and Intucell teams into the Cisco family.

Today I’m pleased to make three announcements that demonstrate the concrete results of all these bright minds coming together:

  1. Cisco has added LTE capability to our Universal Small Cell portfolio.  This includes an industry first – a multimode small cell that provides 3G, 4G and carrier-grade Wi-Fi in a single access point – the USC 7734.  This is in direct response to requests we’re getting from both our Service Provider and Enterprise customers to integrate robust and secure Wi-Fi with 3G and 4G licensed small cell technology to accommodate connectivity and coverage to a wide family of mobile devices.

Expanding the Quantum Software Suite

A year ago we introduced the Cisco Quantum Software suite based on an architectural construct of an automated, closed loop -- linking network, analytics and policy -- to help Mobile Operators better optimize and monetize their network investments.  We announced the network abstraction, analytics, policy and self-optimizing network (SON) platforms. At the Mobile World Congress 2014, we are expanding the software suite in several ways:

Cisco Quantum SON for Small Cells

We’re taking the industry’s most deployed and proven SON solution for multi-vendor, multi-technology macro radio and extending that to multi-vendor Small Cells. This is an industry first.

As the industry evolves, Small cells -- 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi -- will far outnumber macro base stations and are quickly becoming a requirement for broad coverage and capacity at the lowest cost per bit. But some of these benefits are wasted if small cells are not seamlessly coordinated with the rest of the radio network.
By supporting small cells, Cisco Quantum SON now enables true heterogeneous access and seamless experience. And being multi-vendor, operators can include their existing small cell investments, unifying the entire radio network into a single intelligent entity.

Autonomic Networking at Cisco Live Milano!

Welcome to Milano!

Wow, what an activity on the first day at the Cisco Campus / World of Solutions. It’s great to see all these people thirsty for knowledge, and all these people looking for intelligent solutions for their business needs.

One of those business needs is removing complexity from networks by making networks self-managing, or in other words Autonomic Networking.  2014 will be the year that we are shipping the first sets of functionality in this space, so that makes us really exited.  After all we have been working on this for more than 3 years internally, and its great to finally see the fruits of that hard work.

Michael has explained in his blog that Autonomics is all around us, but until now there wasn’t a solution that allowed other applications to leverage a common autonomic infrastructure.  Finally it is here!  The Autonomic Networking Infrastructure allows Service Providers to bootstrap new devices completely zero touch, in a secure fashion, without pre-staging the devices and/or a back-end DHCP Server, and this totally topology independent!  Just plug in the device, and watch it getting authenticated, receiving a Domain Certificate, joining the Autonomic Domain, and joining the Autonomic Control Plane, which provides indestructible IPv6 end-to-end connectivity!  If an mdns-enabled TFTP server is connected to the network, it will leverage the Autonomic Control Plane to announce its service, upon which the devices will pull in their configuration!
