Rural communities are increasingly losing trained professionals to larger cities where up-to-date education & certification are more accessible. The Smart+Connected Community in Action video case study on Colorado Springs takes us to a smart+connected community in rural Colorado that is working with the bigger city of Denver to address this important issue.
Wim Elfrink, Chief Globalisation Officer and EVP, Emerging Solutions and Anil Menon, SVP, Smart+Connected Communities (S+CC) and Deputy Chief Globalisation Officer talk about the value of industry analysts and their appreciation of these “Conceptual Thinkers” after an analyst roundtable session they hosted on S+CC at C-Scape 2011. Nusajaya is a nascent city located on the South-western tip of Peninsula Malaysia and just a short drive away from Singapore. Nusajaya is also one of the crown jewels of Iskandar Malaysia, the special economic zone in the state of Johor and one of the flagships of the Malaysian Government’s national development plan.
“We’re seeing smart cities being built around the world and we think that Nusajaya has the potential to become a benchmark for smart cities. This is just the beginning, we want Cisco to help us plot the path for us towards a Smart+Connected Nusajaya,” said Dato’ Wan Abdullah Wan Ibrahim, managing director and chief executive officer of UEM Land Holdings.
Anil Menon, President for Globalisation and Smart+Connected Communities, shared with the Malaysian media the forces that are driving smart city developments around the world:
Rivas is a city of 70,000 inhabitants, in the suburbs of Madrid. With only a cursory glance, Rivas looks very similar to perhaps thousands of others in Europe. On the inside however, it is one of the most innovative cities in the world. Several years ago, the Mayor of Rivas adopted a vision of putting “everything on IP”. The objective was to become a “zero emission” city by 2030, an ambitious goal shared only by one other city in Europe (Copenhagen, DK).
It is amazing to see just how much has been accomplished.
This week is “Climate Week” and Cisco is showing its “green” stripes in exciting new ways, demonstrating how networking technology can transform how the world manages our energy and environmental challenges.
Going into the week, Cisco was psyched to support our innovation partner, the X PRIZE Foundation in announcing the winners of the $10 million Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE. It was amazing to see that the cars of the future – which get at least 100 mpg – could be here today! These vehicles, many of which are electric, show what’s possible with some ingenuity and passion… not to mention a $10million kitty.
