Next week is the penultimate tech-fest of the year, in cable and broadband circles — the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers’ annual Cable-Tec Expo, happening in New Orleans. One topic we expect to be big involves the Energy2020 initiative, which aims to substantially reduce power consumption in all aspects of traditional and new cable infrastructure — essentially, from the side of the house, to the cloud / data centers.

Carriers are continually challenged to deliver on the customer experience. One of the benefits of Cisco’s cBR-8 Evolved CCAP is the built-in telemetry, programmability, and DOCSIS 3.1 support of the platform. This makes it ideal for gigabit-speed access applications that demand both an automated and optimized cable access network.
With Software Defined Networking the cable operator can read information from the cable plant, make necessary decisions and then push an update back into the network. They can then decide on how conservative or how aggressive they want to be on adjusting the plant performance. Other tools such as a health check monitor that will validate performance, record a variety of statistics, and alert users when it sees something that is not a norm.
In addition, there are applications that enable management functions. Functions that today require human intervention can take place automatically – simplifying network operations and maximizing the customer experience.

As we begin our preparations for Mobile World Congress 2016 (hard to believe), I thought it would be fun to reflect on this year’s show. Cisco worked with the GSMA and the Fira again this year to deliver a carrier-grade Wi-Fi network to 93,000 attendees. After winning last year’s WBA Wi-Fi Industry Award for Most Innovative Hotspot Venue, we challenged the teams to do more this year. We staffed the Network Operating Center with Wi-Fi experts to ensure the network was always delivering peak performance, and we continued to push the envelope on network capability, demonstrating the pure power of a well-deigned carrier-grade Wi-Fi network in a dense trade show environment. In my last blog I outlined the growing level of interest in private LTE networks; triggered when an enterprise has specific design, operational or performance requirements that can’t be met by public services.
On the surface this may look like a marginalisation risk for service providers, and within the context of legacy offers this would be right. However, while we see a growing interest from enterprises in some verticals in having their own LTE wireless infrastructure, Service Providers are far from precluded from a role in enabling these and in some markets are instrumental.

I was reading the latest ACG Research report on Mobile IP Infrastructure and reflecting how the importance of the IP Packet Core has evolved, and how the technology leaders in this area have also evolved.
Back in the “3G era” the Packet Core sat alongside the Voice Core, and was considered an adjunct to the Radio Access Network. The traditional RAN vendors would often bundle the core as part their end-to-end contract. Since initial data services where Mobile Broadband, and monetisation was just based on volume, 3G Packet Cores were all about “feeds and speeds”.
