Cisco Live 2012 Happenings - Manufacturing Industry related

Connected Industries Booth

It was great to see the Cisco Connected Industries Booth that I blogged about recently humming at Cisco Live this week. Lots of delegates interested in talking about Converged Plant-wide networks, Machine-to-Machine applications and technologies, and all the different network sensing, diagnostic and management capabilities of our Partners such as Rockwell Automation, Panduit Corp, Emerson , OSIsoft LLC and Honeywell Process Solutions.

Maciej Kranz, CIBU VP, talks to attendees

I videoed a few of the demos and will talk about them in future blogs, but I wanted to share some great images from the booth, and also from the 'Table-Topics' I helped moderate on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some delegates really get the trends and are on their way to implemented open standards networks throughout their organizations. During the Table topics a pharmaceutical company and a utilities company talked about 'Wireless in Manufacturing' and the direction they were taking. There are challenges ahead and we talked about how Cisco was helping to tackle some of the key ones - security and manageability came out tops, so Cisco's Secure-X architecture advances were appreciated.

Table Topics provides a relaxed discussion

The Rockwell Robot, the OSIsoft PI software, the Panduit solutions and the Emerson and Honeywell sensor networks booths (Wireless Hart and ISA100 respectively) were all big draws, as were the new IE2000 hardened switches from Cisco. There was huge interest in the M2M demonstrations and the way the 'Internet of Things' is becoming as huge as the 2008 forecasts predicted.

The Cisco Live event is a mixture of learning, networking and discussion. If you get a chance to attend you'll meet folks from all over the world and see that the challenges and solutions are often not that different between countries or organizations.

Watch out for my next blogs where I go into more depth on the demonstrations and messaging from Cisco.

Industrial Ethernet adoption enables "Best-in-Class", says Aberdeen Group

April 19, 2012 at 9:43 am PST

I really like it when a research firm goes out to do primary research. We can all pontificate about what customers want. We all have our own opinions and anecdotes.

But when Aberdeen Group wanted to find out about the current  Industrial Networking trends and directions and wanted to find out why manufacturers were converging  Corporate IT and Operational Technology (OT) networks, (and  what was the business case for it?) they went out and talked to real executives in real companies.

So,  Industrial Networking Building the Business Case for industrial Ethernet is a real-life look into what's happening in the industry, and dares to compare industry leaders ("Best in Class") with industry laggards.

"Manufacturing is an industry with complex operations, where the success of any organization lies in producing high quality products at lower costs at the right time. This requires companies to enable real-time visibility into operations at the plant floor as well as at the executive level to make intelligent decisions. Aberdeen's surveyed over 150 executives to understand how industry leaders are taking advantage of industrial networking to enable real-time visibility into data to optimize production, maintenance, and safety."

Automation World First Team Honors Won by Cisco Systems for Leadership in Networking

March 6, 2012 at 11:29 am PST

Recently Cisco was honored to be named in the Automation World 2011 First Team Honorees list. This recognizes Cisco as a leading player and trusted partner for manufacturing, distribution and industrial companies.

Cisco Wins 'First Team' Honoree Award from Automation World Readers

In the category of ‘Networking Components – Ethernet’ Cisco was named as a First Team Honoree, and that doesn’t surprise me. Over the years folks have stopped coming up to me and asking what Cisco is doing at, say, an Industrial Networking event such as the Rockwell Automation Fair. Now folks are really interested in how Cisco is leading the change for Ethernet for the Factory. Cisco’s partnership with Rockwell has spawned the Cisco Industrial Ethernet (IE3000) range, and the Stratix 8000. The Stratix 5700, a smaller form factor and lower entry point than the 8000 is the newest addition to the Range. My recent: Cisco Live UK: Day 4, Part 2 – Rockwell Automation IP Ethernet shows me interviewing Mark Daniels of Rockwell Automation. Mark is the Rockwell Automation Ltd. Business Manager, Architecture and Software, based in Milton Keynes in the UK. Mark is talking about the Cisco Live Demonstration of Motion Control in the video blog. This is the kind of partnership that help produce products and Solutions that helped us win this award.

The second Honor was for ‘Networking Components – Wireless’. Read More »
