Medianet – Horizontal & Vertical integration

Medianet is the architecture for video. The architecture has two very simple concepts:

  1. Build capabilities around services that run across the infrastructure in order to deliver consistent experience.
  2. Build intelligence into the network

The former we term horizontal integration and the latter vertical integration.

Fast Convergence Counts

To reduce network bandwidth, video is highly compressed. Any loss likely causes visible artifact for a varying amount of time. Watch this short video and see the impact of packet loss, jitter and delay on video.

Cisco IT Deploys Medianet

December 15, 2011 at 10:52 am PST

In August, Jawahar Sivasankaran blogged about how Cisco IT is using medianet to help them handle the “video avalanche”. Now can learn more details about the medianet deployment at Cisco in the case study “How Cisco IT Is Deploying a Medianet Architecture to Support Pervasive Video Adoption

The case study discusses the phased approach for medianet deployment at Cisco and some early results. In the phase 1 of the project medianet performance monitor was enabled in approximately 9,000 Cisco Virtual Office Routers to help Cisco IT meet service-level agreements (SLAs) while keeping operational costs down. In subsequent phases, mediatrace and autoconfiguration will be deployed.

The People Behind Medianet

December 9, 2011 at 4:13 pm PST

You have been following the medianet blogs for a while and you may have seen the medianet team member’s profile in these blogs. Now you have a chance to meet two of them:  Ulrica de Fort-Menares who runs the medianet program and  Aamer Akhter who is a technical marketing engineer.

Ulrica and Aamer have been instrumental in driving innovation and collaboration among hundreds of people to make medianet a reality. Watch this video and see them talking about the culture of our team and how medianet innovates the technology world not only by enabling pervasive rich media experiences but also by expanding the boundary of the network.

Medianet at CA World ’11 in Las Vegas

Cisco was a platinum sponsor at CA World 2011 that occurred Nov13-16, 2011. The medianet team had a booth and  a session presented by Ulrica de Fort-Menares --  TM100SN Enhancing Video and Application Experiences with Cisco Medianet. Thank you all who stopped by our booth and watched Ulrica’s session.  It was great to speak with all the visitors that came by the booth or attended the session.

At the booth we demo’d the recently released Cisco Prime Collaboration Manager 1.1 , our comprehensive application management tool that has live awareness of active telepresence sessions that allows operators to use medianet capabilities like performance monitor and mediatrace in the network to monitor service levels for these calls. Operators are alerted to issues detected by the endpoints and they can drill into the session to find the path and quickly determine what nodes in the network are contributing to loss or jitter. The tool also makes use of the IPSLA Video Operations feature that enables validation of a network path with more simulated video traffic. Yes this can be done to an extent with IPSLA, this new enhancement allows for more realistic traffic than previously available.
