Cisco & Telecom New Zealand Test Cisco EPC with LTE-A Category 6

To think that the number of connected devices will grow to possibly 10 billion by 2018 with some forecasts as high as 40 billion connected devices by 2020, that is mindboggling. That means that there will be about 10 connected devices for every man, woman and child on the planet.

While most of the connected devices will only send a few characters and then go silent, people like you and I who own the mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, wearable devices) the need for speed is still very much a requirement.

The Test

So recently Telecom New Zealand performed a series of networking tests with Cisco leveraging LTE-A or LTE-Advanced. As a key LTE-A technology, carrier aggregation allows for full utilization of operators’ spectrum resources, empowering them to provide faster mobile broadband experiences including video conferencing, high-definition content transmission, high-speed video downloads, social networking and more.

My Journey through Cisco Live 2014: Premium Mobile Broadband Services Catch it All!

It seems as if Mobile World Congress just happened yesterday.  And on top of that, more recently, we just wrapped up Cisco Live at the end of May in San Francisco. This is the first time I attended and supported this great event with my team members Archana Goyal, Technical Marketing Engineer in MITG and Brian Walsh, Senior Marketing Manager in SP Mobility Marketing. We did not exactly know what to expect really before attending the event.  All we knew was based on the experience of our team members from the last two years at Cisco Live.  Their experiences indicated that there were not many service providers coming to this event, actually close to zero.

But at the end, it all turned out to be a great experience for us, starting from deciding the key story we wanted to tell to getting the demo completed for supporting the mobility story; especially, on the great team work we have exemplified within our team and among a much larger team. The fact that a number of Service Provider customers visited the Mobility booth was a great experience. If you ask us whether we want to do this again next year for Cisco Live, the answer is a resounding YES.

To make our story also appealing to Enterprise customers and nicely integrating with the main theme of IoT and Evolved Services Platform (ESP) at Cisco Live, we’ve decided to use Premium Mobile Broadband (PMB) service for Read More »

Cisco Carrier-Grade Virtualization for Mobile Operators

Wow how time flies, three months ago there was snow and cold weather in Boston but at the same time it was quite hot at the 2014 MWC. Hot from all of the discussions on Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Orchestration were on everyone’s minds, as both mobile operators and vendors try to answer the question “How to handle Machine-to-Machine (M2M), Internet-Of-Things (IOT) and the 50 Billion new devices by 2020”.

Fast forward to today and NFV & Orchestration Proof Of Concepts (POC) are being requested by or being inserted in every mobile operators network. Many of whom will be publically launching in specific application areas like M2M soon, and several operators are evaluating insertion into their main network sooner than expected.

Cisco – Thales Win 2014 Coveted Global Telecom Business Innovations Award

Jim O'Leary Written By Jim O’ Leary, Senior Mobile Solutions Marketing Manager

What a great week to be in London last week, the weather was great with blue skies and warm weather. The main reason this week to be in London was to attend the annual Global Telecoms Business Summit and Innovations Awards, and what a great industry event it was. During the event there were lots of customer interactions, industry discussions & best practices, and the Innovation Awards.

thalesThe Global Telecom Business Summit and Innovation Awards is an annual event that celebrates innovative solutions created by telecom vendors together with operators to make a difference to the world. Cisco and Thales won the award for Business Service Innovation for “LTE Enhancing the Safety and Security Industry Market” where we leveraged Cisco’s Industry Leading LTE Solution and Thales’ industry leadership in Security Systems Integration.

What is the problem that we identified? The Safety & Security Industry leverages the Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) which is currently in the process of transitioning towards Broadband over the next few years.

Public Safety Blog Series – Premium Mobile Broadband, a virtualized private LTE network

Cisco’s new Quantum Virtual Packet Core technologies and Premium Mobile Broadband will provide remarkable benefits for Public Safety, Smart Cities, Utilities, Mining and more.

Intelligence relies on the ability to create connections -- to connect the unconnected -- and to deliver the right information to the right person, machine or device that facilitates autonomous decision making and action.  Broadband network infrastructure technologies, such as LTE, and the Internet of Things (IoT) products and technologies are accelerating our ability to realize the benefits of the Internet of Everything (IoE) by connecting people, processes, data and things.

Public Safety is seeing a dramatic evolution of needs and realizing that the limitations of Land Mobile Radio technologies, while they do provide for mission critical communications are not sufficient to meet the all of requirements of today and the future.   Many public safety agencies have the need to support officer safety with sensors from connected devices, or machines during an emergency -- sensors that detect a man-down, for example, or other biometrics.  Many personnel in public safety may have video in their vehicles, and some are wearing video giving real time information and intelligence to dispatchers and operations personnel responding to incidents. Video can also be used to support training, investigations, legal evidence, and other processes.  Some cities are deploying new Smart City applications that connect lighting, street parking, or control traffic to improve city traffic management and public safety operations.  Cities use a broad range of additional applications to deliver and support services in day to day operations.   Flexible tools and technologies are needed.
