Collaboration in a Post-PC World Part Two: Architecting a Solution

In the first part of this series I introduced the people in our new “at-a-glance” graphic (see end of this blog where I’ve embedded it) and looked at their diverse roles and the challenges that posed to IT. In this wrap-up blog, I focus on Bijad, the VP of IT, his understanding of the challenges and his response.

Bijad is the man in the middle of the evolution to a post-PC world. As the range of available collaboration technologies has continued to broaden, the focus for IT has begun to swing from delivering individual best-in-class applications to an interest in an integrated collaboration experience that delivers consistent functionality across multiple devices. However, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. From the C-level suites, he is accountable for enabling this cost-effectively while providing a combination of scale, security, and accessibility through a variety of devices and operating systems. From his customers like Doug, Lee, Sarah, and Ben who you met in my previous blog, he’s hearing increasing demands for a rich, personalized, consistent user experience that lets each of them work and collaborate their way — where, when and how they want — without limits. They want tools to help them stay more connected with their peers and other organizations.

Bijad knows that this will require more flexibility and simplicity to preserve a consistent experience and that an open, interoperable architecture is key to success. Even more important, he knows that people, not technology, are the prime source of his company’s competitive differentiation. So he’s listening carefully, and thinking in terms of roles rather than devices.

Collaboration in a Post-PC World Part One: Meet the Team

The workplace has moved beyond the PC as the only means to work. Influenced by their consumer experiences, employee expectations for collaboration have reached new heights. Collaboration must meet the needs of the mobile workplace -- including extending beyond the corporate issued laptop to their device and platform of choice. Anywhere you go collaboration is top of mind for business executives and knowledge workers alike, and they are no longer willing to accept a work environment in which stepping away from your PC turns you into a second-class contributor.

This is putting a lot of pressure on technology leaders from the CIO and the VP of IT, to the VP of Applications. They’re being tasked with creating and supporting a mobile, social, visual, and virtual workspace that unlocks the potential each person brings to the table. People working together can achieve extraordinary things. Today’s challenge for technology and business leaders alike is how to best bring them together over distance as participants in a global economy. The crux of the challenge is to empower people to work their way – where, when and how they want – without limits. How do you architect a solution that supports the way people in a wide variety of roles want to work and on their device of choice? How do you provide a user experience that can engage them all in a way that brings out and connects their expertise and enthusiasm to fuel creativity and innovation? The Post-PC Era and Collaboration in a mobile world: An Asia Pacific POV

Sometime yesterday, Cisco Jabber for the iPad went “live” on the iTunes App store. Normally, we don’t attach much fanfare around a B2B app but I believe we should take a moment to understand the importance of this milestone for the Post-PC era.

Cisco Jabber has been around for a while, enabling end-users the freedom to IM, conference and make video calls from a multitude of devices. Cisco Jabber for iPad now brings that capability to not only the market-leading tablet device but also to a platform where the HD video capabilities of Jabber really comes to life.

If you are a sceptic of the Post-PC era and think its nothing more than just a buzzword, let me attempt to convince you otherwise.

Collaboration on multiple devices, anytime, anyplace, is not just a pipedream. You could argue we have already arrived. Everyone is talking about Collaboration right now and rightly so, it’s everywhere. You can find it down at your local café, in our hospitals and in our schools. But what does this really mean in practice?

As collaboration moves into video, we will see a huge fundamental change in how organisations across Asia operate. With the use of broadband rolling out widely across the region and 4G networks around the corner, video will be widely available across the estimated 2,897 million mobile devices in Asia Pacific. These exciting developments will lead to some significant changes in how we communicate, work and travel. Teleconferences will soon seem old fashioned when you can use TelePresence and feel like you are the same room with people across the world, all thanks to video on high speed internet networks.

From collaboration in healthcare to collaborative educational tools and new technologies across the region, there are some fantastic examples of businesses and public sector organizations deploying innovative technology strategies to drive change across their organization.

I was excited to learn that the good folks at Monash University, Australia’s largest university are using video technology to provide virtual, real-time connections between medical students on work placement in rural Australia and teaching staff located at central campuses. Further afield in India, the Government of Madhya Pradesh in Sehor is deploying a pilot project that enables patients and doctors to meet each other virtually through collaborative technologies without having to commute long distances. Collaborative technology is changing our lives, saving time and resources, and ultimately leading to a more productive and efficient work force.

It’s Not Enough to Be Connected

I attended Enterprise Connect for the ninth time this year, but it was the first time I delivered a keynote address. With the advances in technology today I could have delivered my keynote via TelePresence from Oslo, my home town in Norway. But I chose to attend in person because in this case face-to-face was the best way to tell my story.

I spoke to how “It is not enough to be connected.” This may sound strange coming from me, especially since I represent “the” networking company, but Cisco has evolved, as technology, businesses, and customer needs have evolved.
