This year we’re moving our Packet Optical Conference 2013 to San Jose and it promises to be an exciting three days (May 14-16) full of demonstrations and sneak peeks at new platforms and technology. We’ve also got a number of industry speakers including Krish Prabhu, CEO of AT&T Labs and Bikash Koley, Principal Architect at Google, in addition to key Cisco leaders and technology visionaries. The event will also feature two customer panels featuring representatives from Comcast, Microsoft, Verizon, FTP Vietnam, and others.

All (Optical) Roads Lead to Monza: Join us for Fall PONC 2012

As we look forward to holding our Fall Packet Optical Networking Conference (PONC) in Monza Italy (November 14 and 15, 2012), our thoughts go back to the Spring event earlier this year.  Over 150 customers from more than 50 companies attended the PONC in Richardson Texas – a 50% increase over 2011, and we’re expecting another terrific turnout in Italy. The theme in Richardson was Convergence, referring to the elimination of layers (whether those are IP or optical layers), the elimination of interconnects between those layers, and simplifying operations. Our attendees therefore had an early view – a peek “behind the curtain” if you will – on the concepts and technologies that were key components of the recent Cisco Elastic Core solution announcement which featured our new nLight technology.

Upgrade to 100G/400G/1T Without Upgrading the Fiber Infrastructure

We talked before about how over 150 customers from 50 different network operators and enterprises met last month at Cisco’s campus in Richardson, Texas, to attend the Spring 2012 Packet Optical Networking Conference (PONC). Besides collaborating on best practices and future requirements in IP and optical solutions, attendees also had an opportunity to view Cisco’s extensive “brownfield” 100G DWDM demo setup. It consists of over 1000 km of fiber, with 10G services and shows how we can plug-n-play 100G services onto existing live systems. Cisco Helps Iceland’s Farice Play a Key Role in Green Cloud Computing

One of the topics we covered this week at the Cisco Packet Optical Networking Conference was cloud computing. A benefit of cloud computing is that the physical infrastructure – the storage and compute resources – can be located almost anywhere as long as there is reliable network access. Several countries are leveraging their low cost green power to grow their economies with new data center facilities. A publicly announced example of this is Facebook which has built an enormous facility in northern Sweden. Iceland with its cooler temperatures and green geothermal power, plus ideal location between North America and Europe has seen a significant growth in its data center industry. However, being an island nation it faces a challenge to ensure that sufficient cost-effective network capacity is available to connect off-island users with its storage and compute resources.
