Medianet at Interop NYC 2011

October 3, 2011 at 6:13 pm PST
Cisco medianet part of Interopnet at Interop New York 2011

Observe Cisco medianet in action as you tour Interop's network with conference engineers.

Today was the first day of Interop 2011 in Javits Center in New York City! The event runs until Friday, Oct.  7, with a full schedule.  The show floor is open on Wednesday and Thursday with the Cisco booth highlighting a number of medianet technologies.

Performance monitor, which allows for the analysis of voice/video/data traffic on Catalyst 3000 series switches and ISRs (today) just via a software upgrade, will be shown. Additionally, the medianet booth will have a demonstration setup where the Catalyst 3000, using the IPSLA video operations feature, generates synthetic video traffic that stresses the network in the same way as a variety of video endpoints. In keeping with the IPv6  theme of Interop this year we’ll also have IPv6-enabled video endpoints. In fact, we’ll be showing IPv6 to IPv4 interoperability. Stop by and say hi! Read More »

Cisco on Cisco: The Video Avalanche is here… Medianet to the rescue!

Cisco’s business is going through a transformation and the company is relying on Rich Media tools such as Collaboration and Video to cut costs, increase employee productivity and improve operational efficiencies.

As of July 2011, there are a total of about 1250 high end Cisco Telepresence systems and another 6000+ Tandberg based Telepresence and video endpoints. The total number could grow to 25,000 in the next 18-24 months. Also, the use of video with WebEx is growing every day. The company is also leveraging video technologies for live meetings such as the Global Sales meeting that brings together 20,000+ employees virtually for two days. Use of Video on Demand technologies is increasing through video blogs, show and share and other employee and customer engagement applications. Digital Media Systems have become a key part of the employee communication strategy and the Safety and Security team is also upgrading several thousands of new security cameras.

All of these bring tremendous challenges to IT, especially to the Infrastructure teams. Architecting, Designing and Operating the network for this large scale, global video deployment has made the IT Infrastructure teams think through their plans.

Cisco IT is rolling out the Medianet architecture to address many of these challenges.

Medianet at Cisco Live Las Vegas 2011

July 26, 2011 at 11:10 am PST

It’s been a few weeks from this year’s US Cisco Live event, and we are energized from the excitement and resonance from our partners and customers. Also a little bit exhausted (see what was going on).

This year we saw the build out of the visibility pillar of the medianet architecture. With features like performance monitor, mediatrace, and IPSLA Video Operation, we have added very powerful tools existing cisco tool chest (think regular IPSLA, NetFlow, etc.) to aid in the deployment and maintenance of rich media applications. There were also a number of management solutions from our CDN partners (CA Technologies, Cisco, SevOne, ActionPacked and Plixer) ready to exploit these features.

The week started on Thursday night (4 days before the event) with the enablement of the cat3750s and ISRs in the Cisco Live production network with the mediatrace and performance monitor feature. There were a number of media endpoints in the network this year ranging from IP Video Surveillance Cameras, IP phones, to Cisco TelePresence equipment. In fact, the Cisco TelePresence Content Server (TCS) was performing a pilot at cisco live where 46 sessions were recorded leading to 111 GB of video content. Medianet performance monitor was monitoring the audio and video traffic generated from the C90 and stored at the TCS. The video surveillance setup consisted of over 50 cameras (HD and SD) storing over 10 terabytes of data. Medianet performance monitor was also analyzing the video traffic here for anomalies. Fortunately, nothing bad occurred on this portion of the network but we were ready to identify and fix it quickly!
