I’m pleased and proud to report that Cisco was named this week as one of the Top 50 Most Innovative Companies by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). This marks the third year in a row that we’ve been included on this prestigious list alongside other industry innovators like Apple, Google, and Tesla. In all, we’ve been included in nine out of the last ten reports.
I’m even more pleased to see how well our engineering direction aligns with the criteria that BCG highlights as defining the most innovative of all companies. Those criteria are:
1. The Rising Need for Innovation Speed.
The Internet-fueled transformation of industries is happening at incredible speed. From hospitality to health care, TV to telecommunications, our customers are calling upon us to help them out-wit, out-pace, and out-innovate potential disruptors. I’m exhilarated by how our engineers are rising to this challenge.
Take the service provider industry, for example. This is a market that’s under incredible pressure to drive new revenues by rapidly delivering communications and business services securely with greater agility, automation, and simplicity – at a lower cost.
With a project called ‘xSpeed’, Cisco delivered powerful software innovations for cloud networking that precisely met service provider needs in just 13 weeks. The xSpeed team had autonomy to execute and they delivered first demos within three weeks. xSpeed is one of our internal startups, called Alpha’s, combining the speed and agility profile of a startup with the resources and scale of Cisco.
2. Strong Innovators are Lean Innovators.
BCG calls out the power of small teams. I couldn’t agree more! The culture I have been driving within engineering is to have my engineers “Think Big, Act Small” while we provide the autonomy to execute. Another great example of our success here is the rapid rise of Cisco Spark, our team collaboration application that is transforming the way teams stay connected. That team has experimented, taken risks, dared to break glass – and customers are loving the outcomes! On that note, watch out for more exciting Spark news at our Collaboration Summit next week!
3. Enabling Technology-Enabled Innovation.
We have encouraged our customers to embrace digital, connected business processes. We’ve also led the world for three decades in connecting our own business processes, from the way we close our books to the way we empower our sellers. How we innovate has become technology-enabled too. Today we’re creating end-to-end engineering workflow automation and enabled continuous integration for our agile development efforts. The result is that we’re moving faster than ever. We have reduced technology build time by 50 to 60% in many cases. And we’ve created iterative processes to enable us to review internal demos every two weeks. How’s that for technology-enabled innovation!
4. The Prerequisites of Profitable Adjacent Growth.
Pursuing market adjacencies has always been a Cisco strength. Today, more than 40% of our product revenues are generated by businesses outside of switching and routing. And we’re aggressively pursuing more areas of innovation, including Edge Computing, data analytics at the edge, and the Internet of Things.
Cisco engineering is maniacally focused on creating innovation that matters to our customers. And I’m proud to see our efforts recognized in this report. It’s a great accolade to the 22,000+ engineers who are powering Cisco’s Innovation Engine every day!

Throughout 2013, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with services provider leaders from around the globe. Whether they are large or small, focused on consumer services or business, or engaged in video or mobility, their ambitions are very much in line with our strategy: To help them monetize and optimize their networks, while accelerating their ability to deliver their services.
- Monetize: From innovative new managed security services, to video, cloud and new machine driven (M2M) services to enable the Internet of Everything (IoE), there are a number of new incremental revenue opportunities for service providers which sit at the very center of these trends estimated at over $2.9 Trillion over the next 10 years.
- Optimize: Delivery of these new services has to be less than the cost to deploy and operate them. At the end of the day, the SP is a business, and, as all businesses, they need to be profitable. New ways to deliver these services as economically as possible are key to their success.
- Accelerate: In this dynamic marketplace, service providers need to move quickly to seize these new opportunities. Cisco’s long-standing belief has always been that companies need to evolve to drive forward and lead through market transitions. The same is true for our executive talent. Evolving our talent requires putting them in new roles, expanding their perspective and skill sets and bringing fresh ideas and energy to the business. This is what we’ve recently done with Edzard Overbeek’s new move from SVP of our Asia-Pacific-Japan region to head of our global Services business and Bruce Klein’s move from SVP of Public Sector Sales to the head of our Worldwide Partner Organization.
Over the past year, we have refocused our engineering organization for agility, better decision making, and a renewed focus on innovation. The market share numbers speak for themselves and our customer confidence has never been stronger. We have a strong leadership team and the business group leaders have demonstrated strong execution. Now the time is right for us to drive the next phase of our organizational evolution.
With that, we are pleased to announce Padmasree Warrior will expand her role to become Cisco’s Chief Technology and Strategy Officer where she will be responsible for identifying customer and industry transitions and determining Cisco’s strategy to address them. Padma will work closely with Cisco’s engineering, field, operations and services leadership, and will define strategy, investments, acquisitions and the evolution of Cisco’s technology partner ecosystem. Additionally, Padma will be responsible for thought leadership around Cisco’s products and architectures, technical talent development and recruiting, and she will increase her time with external stakeholders. The business group CTO’s will report dotted line to Padma to enable strong alignment between technology strategy, business strategy and M&A activity. Over the past four years, Padma has established a tremendous track record of results, such as building Cisco’s strategy and execution around architectures, cloud, overall technology strategy framework, and attracting and developing industry leading technical talent. We look forward to accelerating our market position under Padma’s strategic direction.
After 13 years of exceptional service to Cisco, Ned Hooper will be leaving the immediate Cisco family to form an independent investment partnership company and to pursue his goal to be a principal investor. Ned has been working on his plan with us over a number of months, and we look forward to partnering with him in his new endeavor. Ned has a unique passion and skill for investment and strategy, and will focus on this in the next phase of his career. Ned pioneered the model for large-scale M&A at Cisco and drove significant transactions for the company such as Tandberg, WebEx, Airespace, Starent and NDS. Additionally, he has managed our $2B investment portfolio with both strategic and financial returns to the company. Ned’s strategy and business development team will now report to Padma. We would like to thank Ned for his contributions, leadership, friendship and his continual drive to always do the right thing for Cisco.
Finally, Pankaj Patel will assume the leadership of Cisco’s engineering organization. Pankaj will drive
innovation, operational excellence and agile development across our products, solutions and architectures, and continue to increase our relevance with our expanding customer base. Pankaj’s deep customer relationships and extensive engineering expertise, combined with his ability to mentor and grow top engineering talent will serve Cisco well as we drive the next phase of engineering leadership for the company. While you may be familiar with Pankaj’s service provider experience, he previously spent 16 years in the enterprise space. Over the past 13 years, Pankaj developed and grew Cisco’s service provider business which today accounts for approximately 35% of Cisco’s direct product revenue. Pankaj’s leadership in key service provider areas such as core routing, edge routing, SP mobility and SP video has positioned Cisco extremely well for the future. Throughout his tenure Pankaj has delivered a significant number of products to the Cisco portfolio, addressing a wide range of customer needs. Over the past year as the co-leader of engineering, Pankaj has increased his involvement in Cisco’s enterprise business, as the intersection points between service provider and enterprise come closer together.
As we stay focused on being the best Cisco for our customers, partners, investors and employees today, we never lose track of where we want to go in the future. We are excited about this evolution in our organization. Please join us in congratulating Padma, Pankaj and Ned on the next phase of their respective journeys.

The plethora of TV and video devices, services and applications, which seems to grow on a daily basis, is enough to confuse even the most ardent technofile. Today, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Cisco made a major step toward simplifying the TV experience.
Amid weeks of industry speculation, Cisco introduced Cisco Videoscape, a comprehensive TV platform for service providers that brings together digital TV and online content with social media and communications applications to create a new, truly immersive home and mobile video entertainment experience.
“Videoscape represents the future of television,” said Pankaj Patel, SVP and GM of Cisco’s Service Provider Business. “We believe this platform will do for television what the mobile Internet has done for mobile phones and devices. This is the only entertainment solution available today that delivers this experience in full scope, combining all the necessary technology components of the cloud, the network and client devices. We’re looking forward to working with service providers to give give consumers the best TV experience they can get.”
