More VXLAN Q&A

September 14, 2011 at 10:34 pm PST

So, the recent VXLAN announcement we made with some of our partners (including VMware, Citrix, and RedHat) certainly generated a lot of questions.

So let me cover some of the most common ones I have heard.

Why do we need a new protocol? We already have VLANs, MPLS, OTV, LISP and a whole host of other acronyms to contend with!

Live Demos at Cisco Live, Las Vegas next week!

I hope you are all packed and ready for Cisco Live – Las Vegas next week. In the Sin City we will demo our innovative products and solution architectures that will help simplify and accelerate your journey to private and hybrid clouds. The best way to quickly learn about our products and solutions is by seeing them “LIVE IN ACTION”. With more than 50-60 demos being showcased across different focus areas (e.g. Borderless networks, collaboration, data center etc.) in the Cisco Main Booth, I thought it would be helpful to highlight the data center specific demos.

Dedicated to Cisco Data Center products and solution architectures, we have total of 12 demo kiosks with different themes as listed below. Each of the kiosks will have one or more demos that will highlight Cisco’s unique offering in that focus area. All the kiosks will be staffed by Cisco experts to answer all your tough questions. I am very excited to be part of the show and would love the opportunity to meet you in person. I will be available at the data center demo kiosk 12 -- “Automate and Simplify Your Journey to Cloud”.

DCI Use Case: Capacity Expansion

Hi,

Today I want to bring up DCI use case that I’ve been thinking about: capacity expansion.  As you know, the purpose of DCI is to connect two or more Data Centers together so that they share resources and deliver services.  The capacity expansion use case is when you have temporary traffic bursts, cloud bursts, either planned or unplanned, maintenance windows, migrations or really any temporary service event that requires additional service capacity.

To start addressing the challenge of meeting these planned and unplanned cloud burst and capacity expansion requirements, check out the new ACE + OTV feature called Dynamic Workload Scaling announced recently.

Introduction to “Cisco Datacenter Interconnect (DCI)”

As I continue to ramp up my understanding of Cisco’s innovative datacenter technologies and joint solutions with our open ecosystem partners, I had opportunity to sit down with Jake Howering, Product Manager for Cisco’s Data Center Interconnect (DCI) solution.

DCI technologies are key to connecting data centers, and simplifying the mobility and scalability of physical and virtualized application workload to address various real world scenarios.

Jake’s one of the very sharp Product Managers I’ve met. Good news is that Jake has joined the blogosphere and will be actively involved is discussions around Cisco DCI solution. Welcome Jake!

Within 30 minutes of discussion, Jake and I touched upon the basic concepts of DCI and the innovative solutions we have brought to market jointly with partners like EMC, NetApp, and VMware. Here is the summary of our discussion around DCI and what it means to the customers:
